I was trying to put a lapped zipper into a cover for a pillow form (14"x18"). Since the fabric was striped, I decided to only cut one piece 29"x19" and have 3 seams, with the lapped zipper in the bottom seam.

I sewed and basted the 19" seam for the zipper, leaving the sides open. Basted in one side of the zipper, zipped the zipper, folded it over and put in the seam. From this point, I couldn't figure out how to finish inserting the zipper, so I split the tube open at the top (4 seams now).

Now that I'm writing this out and looking at the picture book, I think that I could have finished inserting the zipper without splitting the tube.

But I'm wondering about the topstiching. Since the pillow covering was small I didn't have much of an opening to move fabric out of the way to topstitch. Is there a trick to doing the topstitching on the "tube"?

Thanks for the help.

I don't have any tricks for you. I think you probably could have manuvered it out of the way as you sewed it.

I would have used an invisible zipper. I am in love with them now. You can find an invisible zipper foot for around $4 that will fit just about any machine, if your machine does not come with one made for it. I found some neat instructions for inserting here: The Sewing Room - Click on Sewing Techniques - Zippers - Invisible Zipper

From the video (by the way great website, thanks for the link) it appears that the invisible zipper the same as doing a centered zipper, except the invisible zipper doesn't have the topstitching. Right?

I'll have the check out that foot, it looks like it has channels in the bottom of it?

Alathia...you're correct about the invisible zipper, no topstitching, and yes, the special foot has channels that ride over the teeth.

On your regular zipper topstitching, there really isn't any trick. You just sew a little way, pull the fabric out of the way, sew more, pull, etc. It might help to turn the tube wrong side out, so the fabric that's 'in your way' is on top instead of underneath.
