I've done a site search a Google search and checked in the back of the sewing magazines such as Threads and can't find an advertisement for a patttern. Wikkipedia gives a pretty good description but I'd like a pattern if I can find one, if for no other reason than it will fuel my dreams of next summer.

I will have to find out what that is first. And what Wikkipedia is for that matter.

Guayaberra is a shirt worn in central and south America as well as Cuba. it is worn outside the pants, has four pockets and a sort of pintucking embellishment up the front, crossing the pockets. Wikkipedia is a free online encyclopedia that is open for public contribution of articles and pictures.

Here's what one looks like:

guayabera

And here's a standard embroidery panel:

Looks to me as though you could use a basic McCall's convertible collar shirt pattern, but do the pintucking and embroidery before cutting the garment out.

Think the short sleeve shirts Desi Arnaz wore in I Love Lucy...this looks like it could be easily adapted from most short sleeve men's shirt patterns.

our guyaberas have the pintucking done on a separate piece of fabric and then applied to the shirt (a basic camp shirt should do). i have all sorts of sizes, from toddler 2 to adult 44, and they all have the same thing.

however, i would bet the really fancy linen ones from veracruz and central/south america would be pintucked before cutting out. don't forget the tone on tone embroidery. i've seen multicolored embroidery too.

This might not be good for anything but future reference - but over a year ago I did a Folkwear survey and one thing they were considering is adding a Guayabera to their collection.

So you might check-in with them to see if they ever plan to do that.

Thanks a lot. You have given me some great ideas. I looked at that aloha shirt pattern and I think that with the added pintucking and embroidery it will work out fine.
