Date: 1/12/06 10:55 AM My aunt and uncle gave me some gorgeous fabric for divali and said "You like to sew so we thought we'd get you fabric instead of clothes!" But I've never made an Indian suit before! I've looked for patterns but people in the Indian communities basically laughed at that Apparently it's a taught tradition. I am going to try to draft my own pattern looking at suits I already have because they are very basic clothing items I hope..but I'm not a seasoned pattern drafter. I thought I'd see if anyone has made one already and has some helpful hints? Or perhaps they did find a pattern somewhere that exists? |

Date: 1/12/06 11:39 AM There was also a big thread on this over at Sewing World a year or two ago. There are lots of tunic patterns out right now that would work well. ------ www.thereisjoyadventures.blogspot.com |

Date: 1/12/06 11:43 AM I remember one comment from the salwar kameez converstaions that has stuck with me. It is by definition a pair of pants with a long top--the design of both is up to you the sewist. I am planning a matching tunic top from the Simplicity Threads tunic pattern now to go with a pair of Burda one-seam pants. Hopefully to be completed this spring some time.

Date: 1/12/06 12:37 PM Shubha,
I've been thinking of doing my own salwar kameez for a long time. I did sew one but with help from an instructor when I was in India.
Here are some information I collected on salwar kameez for sewing one for myself. Hope that helps you.
Mini's salwar kameez review
A discussion on the boards on SK
A neuemode pattern
Deepika's SK
Deepika's SK2
Vogue tunic top
There are so many tunic tops which can be used for the short kameez/kurta which is popular these days.

Date: 1/12/06 12:55 PM Just FYI, there is a salwar-kameez pattern you can get from India if you can have somebody buy it for you there. It is made by Usha sewing machine company and sold at sewing machine stores for about Rs.200. It is something you can ask a relative bring if they are visiting from India. I have one but I have not sewn it up yet. I happened to get a size L when I needed a M.
But I agree, lots of patterns here can be adapted for salwar-kameez.

Date: 1/12/06 1:07 PM Shubha, Folkwear also has a kamiz pattern, although I think you'd be better off with some of the other suggestions since the fit will probably be better.
Look at #135
Have you thought about actually taking an old suit apart and making your own pattern rather than just copying? That might work. -- Edited on 1/12/06 2:07 PM -- ------ kristine

Date: 1/13/06 6:44 PM Shubha,
Please post and let us know what you come up with! I'm interested in a traditional pattern myself, but nothing I've seen hits it completely. HotPatterns has a really great tunic pattern, but it's *definitely* not traditional. The closest I've seen to what *I'm* hoping to find is the Folkwear pattern; but I'm not totally convinced.
Thanks!

Date: 7/27/07 6:15 AM I wear a lot of salwar kammez style clothes and I have bought the New Look 6715 pattern and can't wait to make it, it's like a modern, slim fitting SK.
EDIT: Meant to say I'll be making the longer knee length tunic rather than the short one. -- Edited on 7/27/07 6:17 AM -- |
