I'm making the pirate shirt with ruffles for my DH. I need to do an ease stitch. I'm sure this is something so very simple but I just have no clue. I have a vintage singer slantomatic 401A. I cannot find anything in my manual on how to get this stitch wide. Help

An ease stitch (also known as a gathering stitch) is simply a straight stitch using your longest stitch length. For ruffles, you would need to do this stitch along the length of the ruffle, slightly inside the seam allowance (leave long tails and don't backstitch on the ends). Then pull on the bobbin thread to gather the ruffle to the correct finished length, and then attach it to the shirt. Does that answer your question?

Great thanks much! I put it on 6 which is my lowest setting (6 stitches per inch) but I felt like I was going to break the thread when I tried to gather. It worked! Thanks again
