Hi,
Sorry I keep asking about the same machines. I'm finally going to get a sewing machine, and after my incessant questioning here, I've decided on a Janome Jem 2, assuming I can buy one onlne. However, I am curious if anybody owns or has used this particular machine. It's not nearly as easy to find as the Janome Jem Gold, but I like that it has a built-in handle. I was looking at the reviews of the Jem Gold, and saw somebody make a reference to the Jem Gold 2, in which they stated it had "drop feed dogs", unlike the Jem Gold . I don't even know what that is, and so now I'm wondering if the 2 is the same as the Jem Gold, but with the addition of a handle and the feed dog thing? Sorry to sound so ignorant, but, well, I am when it comes to this! Also, I think I'd like a free arm, but the few descriptions I've found on the 2 don't mention this feature. I assumed neither the Jem Gold nor the Jem Gold 2 had a free arm, until I read the reviews on here again, and found the Jem Gold DOES have a free arm. So, does anyone have personal experience with the 2? Is it as good as the Standard Jem Gold? Any reason to go for the original? Maybe that's why the 2 is not nearly as prevalent as the first model? Any help would be great, as I plan on ordering this week.
Thank you! Especially to those that have read my previous mulitple questions!

The Jem Gold and Jem Silver are discontinued models and can be found at on line dearlers. The Jem2 can be found on the Janome.com website and is still a current machine. The original Jem Gold and Silver have a little plastic plate that covers the feed dogs for sewing on buttons and quilting etc. The Jem2 has the ability to lower the feed dogs instead of using a little plastic cover which I feel is much nicer. The handle is also nice because these machines are very small for toting to class etc.
The Jem Gold and Silver I believe are identical except for their color and outward appearance. The Jems were made for Quilters to take to classes especially the ASG. When the Sewing Guild had it's 25th Anniversary Janome designed the Jem Silver with the ASG logo on the head of the machine and the little blue sewing bag for their anniversary.
I owned a Jem Silver which I gave to one of my daughters when she had children. They are great little machines and make beautiful button holes. I don't know the price of the Jem Gold 2 but I bought my Jem Silver from an on line dealer for $199 and he threw in some extra feet and free shipping and it came in the little blue carry bag. It does have a free arm and I assume the Jem Gold 2 also does.
I believe the Jem Gold's original price was around $349-$399 before being discontinued. I have no Janome dealer near. I called an out of town dealer a few years aga for the Jem Silver and they could not get one for me..I guess because it is discontinued. On line dealers sell most discontinued models that is why you see so many of the Gold and Silver Jems and not the Jem Gold 2. The Jem Gold 2 I assume are still sold at Janome dealers and is still on the Janome site.
Best of luck in your decision. You won't be disappointed in a Janome. These little machines weigh only around 12 lbs but sew like the bigger models.

Ky is right--they are the same machine but Jem Gold 2 was "upgraded" to include the handle and drop-feed mechanism and is only available in stores tho I did post a link for you last week and I'm not sure if that store can sell to you or not. I just know he has them in stock. I'm guessing price will be $250-ish and I don't know if it comes with a bag or not. The accessory case slides off the machine to expose the free-arm on all of the Jem models. There were many Jem Golds sold and my dealer still has the Jem Gold. For a long time, no one carried the Jem Gold 2--possibly bc they had already so much stock in the other one. Then, about the time most of the Jem's were gone, Janome came out with 2 Platinum Jems which are computerized models with more stitches, auto buttonholes, needle up/down and more. These are also nice but range from $400 for the 720 to $600 for the 760. I've noticed now they have been in stores for awhile, the prices are coming down. If you have a Janome dealer near you or a family member has access to a dealer, you can get the Jem Gold 2 that way. If it is not in stock, it could be ordered. They are great LITTLE machines but very basic. If that's what you're looking for then you will love owning one.

Thank you both for your responses! Sewfrequent, I did look at Ace sew and vac, and wrote asking if they had the Jem Gold 2. They do, and it's actually about the same price that the Jem Gold is being sold for all over the internet (the 2 is $219.99). Actually, that was one of the reasons I wondered if maybe it wasn't as popular/something not as good about the 2. Since it's a newer model, I thought it odd it would only cost $20 more than a discontinued model. Not sure if they will ship, as I didn't ask yet. Anyone know if the warranty is good on a machine bought brand new off EBay?

Oh that's a great deal! For some reason, there aren't many Jem 2's floating around but I believe it is just the clearance price on the Jem Gold/Silvers coinciding w/ the release of the computerized Platinum models. Afterall, $150 isn't THAT much difference in price when you consider the extras on the 720. When the Gold 2 came out a few years ago, it was very popular bc adding a handle and drop-feed fixed the 2 over-sights on the JG. The one thing it didn't add was needle up/down. There's now a Jem or version of it in every price range starting w/ the $60 mini-ultra at Sears (Hancock's has one also) up to the 760 with 60 stitches, start-stop button, needle up/down and more. The Gold 2 is not inferior in any way just 1/2 the people bump down to the JG to save the $50 and others bump up to the 720 for the extra features.

You might only being interested in the smaller Jem type machines but I just noticed that Sears has a computerized Janome made Kenmore 19110 for only $249 with 50 stitches, 110 stitch functions and 3 kinds of one step button holes, and needle up/down and many features. Another machine I saw on line for the same price and very similar to the Kenmore is the Janome Sew Precise. Both models also have a speed control on the head of the machines. I just thought you might want to know of these offers because they are Janomes still small enough to move around at only 17 lbs for the Kenmore. and I assume the Sew Precise is around the same weight.

Well thank you for your info about Ace sew n vac! I called them, and ordered my Janome Jem Gold 2 today! I had a bid on a Jem Gold 2 on Ebay, but the price on there got so high, it would've cost me the same with shipping as buying it from Ace. And now I'll definitely get the machine, and get it quicker! AND if anything is wrong when it shows up, I'll have some kind of recourse! Woo hoo! I can't wait to get it! 7 days.....Then I will finally have a machine on which to learn to sew, instead of trying to learn, and having to deal with a all the problems of a messed up machine instead (my current situation).
I'm so excited! Thank you for your help, and I'll certainly be on here once I get the machine, asking MORE questions, and (hopefully) extolling the virtues of my new SM!

Hello tigrema

Being a free PR member, I can't PM, so I'm hoping you might still be reading posts. How is your Gold 2? Hope all is well with you!

There still aren't many Reviews on Pattern Review for the JemGold2! Who else is happy or not happy w/theirs? I have been looking for a reliable, lite-weight machine w/good tension & good stitch-quality for my 7th grade daughter to take to her sewing lessons & to use at home. I can get a White Quilt & Sew or Janome Harmony for less money, but I keep coming back to the JemGold2. Frustrating that the Janome dealers here only sell high end ones, so I can't "test drive" one. I want one she can carry it & move it around with ease, but I also want it to be one that she can have for a long time, take to college, and that will last her until she is ready to upgrade to something really nice. JemGold 2 users, please weigh in!!!
