I bought some 2 inch wide waistband elastic with words on it. I want to use it in place of elastic in a casing. How would I do this? Do I need to turn down the fabric the amount the casing would be, then attach the wide elastic? Do I stretch it while sewing it? Use a zigzag stitch? Any help would be apprecaited. Thanks.

I assume that you what the elastic to show from the out side of the garment, because you mentioned it has words on it??

I reused some designer waistband elastic for a pair aof boxers for my son, and this is pretty much what I did.

First determine where the finished top edge of your wasitband would be if you followed the pattern and used a casing.

How do you want to finish off the fabric edge? This is important, because it will determine how much to trim off of the fabric/pattern piece.

Assuming that you are going to serge, zig-zag or use pinking shears to finish off the top of the fabric, I will give the following suggestions.

Measure from the point that the "normal" top of the waistband would be, down 1 1/2" to 1 3/4". Cut around the garment at this location.

Finish off the raw edge as mentioned. Or you can fold the raw edge 1/8 to 1/4" or so to the right side of the fabric and top stitch. It will be covered by the elastic, so it shouldn't show.

On your elastic, once you determine the length, you will need to seam it together. A serger or triple zig-zag would be best.

Mark center front, center back and the 1/4 point onthe side of your garment wasit. Also mark the elastic at the 1/4 points.

Pin the wrong side of the elastic band to the right (outside) of the garment waist. The fabric will over lap the elastic on the inside by about 1/2". Make certain to match up the 1/4 marks on the elastic and the waist of the garment.

Yes, you will have to stretch the elastic as you sew. Because you are strecthing the elastic as you sew, You can use a straight stitch if you like.

Wow, thank you so much! That was a great detailed explanation that even I could follow. It all makes sense! Thanks so much. I hadn't considered that I should apply the elastic like you do neckline ribbing or FOE; it makes sense, though.
Thanks, again!
