I just popped in to the local(VERY small) thrift store today to browse the patterns-lots of oldies and it's fun to look! Well before I went to the pattern area I decided to look around.

The first thing I saw was a BERNINA!!!! sewing machine!! A 530-1 record, circa 1961, with EVERYTHING-feet galore, electrical cord, *instruction* manual (yah!) and the knee operator thingie-no foot pedal, it's operated with a knee lever. It was even in the original case.

Guess how much?!

(drumroll please )

$34.50

Needless to say it came home with me

Anyhoo I just had to share Now I have to get it working For some reason the feed dogs aren't working, they take one stitch forward and one stitch back, repeatedly. I'm about to run off and visit a friend who's good at repairing old machines. Keeping my fingers crossed!!

Even if I have to take it in to get it going, it's still a steal

I am a happy camper, LOL.

Ooo Ooo Ooo Ooo OOOOOOO! I don't know a thing about that machine, but I found a picture of it and it sure is cute! Best wishes on making that kitty purr.

Must get out to thrift shops more often....Don't you wonder who gives these things away? Congratulations. I'm very happy that it was adopted into a good home.

Wow! That's great. Just think..some Bernina feet I think cost more than what you paid for your machine.

Sounds like the stretch stitch setting is being used for the back and forth stitching. Try turning little knobs and blowing the little whistles!

Thanks y'all! I just got home and we managed to get it going-I just fiddled a bit with the screws holding the feed dog mechanism and when we tried again it made a *beee-YOU-ti-full* stitch! I have no idea how it fixed it, but I'll take it!

I wish it wasn't so late, so I could play with her some more

We did have one mishap, however. A knob was stuck, and in my friend's enthusiasm to help she snapped off a piece of it (it's the knob that changes the needle position) OOPS.

We glued it back on, but now it has a boo-boo. Oh well. I'm still excited

I can't wait till tomorrow to give her a good run. I think I'll make the roman shade for my DS's room I've had cut out for weeks

Oh, and I highly recommend thrift stores for sewing machine finds! It's such fun when you get a deal! I think this one was probably left over from an estate sale-you'd be amazed what you can find.

I am just searching messages b/c I scored one in operating condition (very good condition with case/manual/etc) for 10 bucks! Woo Hoo! I almost talked the gal into keeping it (it was her mother's who was upgrading). I can't wait to get it out and play with it :)

I was told by an employee at our local Goodwill thrift store that they often are named as the beneficiary of entire contents of homes in people's wills! She also said they get lots of items that did not sell in estate sales. So, I would imagine that is how some very nice sewing machines end up in thrift shops.
