I have an older Designer 1 that uses the floppy drives. I'd like to upgrade to the USB drives. I asked some questions of the lady in our local Viking dealer and wasn't very satisfied with her answers.

For starters, she said that in order to write designs to the USB drive, my older software won't do it and I'll have to buy at least the minimum 3D or 4D software. What good is the upgrade if I can't save designs to the USB drive w/o spending another $400 - $600 on top of the upgrade for my machine?

I also read somewhere when searching the net that people were able to write to a floppy, and then use Windows to copy/paste the designs over on the USB drive. Anyone tried that?

What about embroidery softwares? I may be interesting in buying something like Embird as long as it understands about USB drives and saving designs in the Designer 1 format to it.

Any help out there?

I'm no help except to say that as long as I can buy floppies (and drives, if changing computers at some point), I won't be upgrading. I see no point.

I was interested in upgrading until I was told that it would cost $850 to do so . That was a little more money than I wanted to part with . I could learn to really love my floppies for that sum.

I was surprised when my dealer told me it wasn't worth it. He said it is not any faster and when/if floppies are no longer available, just to think about it then. Of course, i'm still trying to figure out how to get a design to my floppy by any means so very much not in the know! That's why I merely repeat what my dealer told me when I asked.

I had the chance to speak with another dealer this weekend and she was frank with me. "It's just not worth it." But she did say that buying the $99 4D Organizer software should allow me to put embroidery files on any of the media, including the USB.

After I looked more at the Designer SE, I'm going to save my pennies (for a VERY LONG TIME) and upgrade sometime. The SE just has some nice features that would be incredibly useful to me. I'll probably splurge at the same time (can anyone say "home equity loan"?) and get the full 4D professional software.

I have a Designer I w/floppy that I was considering upgrading to USB. I was surprised to hear from a dealer that his supplier told him they are having "trouble" with these upgrades. I was just on ebay and a dealer is having to sell a Designer 1 as is, and only as a sewing machine because the upgrade to usb didn't work for customer, even after three different usb drives. Very important to know, and I'm glad I kept my floppy. BTW, VIP customizing software works with Designer 1, it says so right in the setup/configuration. Sometimes dealers don't tell us all the options, sorry to say. My last computer didn't have a floppy drive - enter an external floppy drive. It works perfectly. I bought a huge box of discs, since they are not readily available anymore.

I also have Embird, and it will write designs to a disk in the proper format. During my last move, somehow my dongle was set free (hated the darn thing anyway)...and so I was greatly relieved to learn that Embird can do the job. (These days I seldom embroider, but at least I know that it's still available to me when and if I choose to do that.)

I would never spend the kind of money that Viking wants to upgrade my machine. I'll save that money and switch brands.

I have D1 with floppies and wouldn't think of upgrading. I went to office supply and bought some new floppies, but so far I'm still writing over old ones and they are fine. MY dealer said it would be around $600 for USB. I just can't see that. I'm glad I can use these floppies. My first embroidery machine used cards . I only had two cards as they were very expensive so I'm happy with floppies.

I had a D1 with the floppy, and due to some servicing issues (very long story) Viking ended up trading that one for a new D1, but it was the USB. Honestly, I much prefer the floppy. I found it much easier to use, and slightly faster. I wouldn't waste the money...the difference is not worth it!
