How to handle skirt godet seams with sheers?

Has anyone tried sewing skirts with godets using chiffon or any see-through or drapey/lightweight fabrics?

Would chiffon work for the (dance) skirt fabric and the inserted godets? How would I sew the seams?

For regular side seams, I'd use a French seam technique, but I don't think that would work here.

I was thinking of possibly using my serger's rolled hem, but my seamstress friend/instructor says that would add too much bulk.

Expert advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Amy

This fall I bought a RTW skirt made of a chiffon type fabric. It has godets and moves beautifully. Won't be home before 7 but will post how the seams were handled as soon as I take a look at it.

You can put them in with a serger. I've done it successfully with knit lame and panne velvet for a dance outfit.

I've sewed, but not mastered, godets, so I can't offer any advice on that. I just wanted to point out that if you are planing a lining or a complimentary slip, don't add godets to that one, it would add too much bulk. Make an A-line lining instead or use the gores from the skirt, but then sew the sideseams only until the point where godets were added to the fashion fabric and leave slits.

If you don't mind, would you please elaborate a little on the technique you used?

Did you use a rolled hem, and did you have the top of the godet coming to corner points or did you go up one side, round off the top and go down the other?

I was even thinking that if I tried placing the godets in the seams, it might be an interesting effect to have serged seams facing outward with a rayon (for some shine) thread.

I'm taking one-on-one sewing lessons, so I would have my friend helping me get any of these advanced techniques right.
Many thanks,
Amy

Thanks, Claudia:
Good point (no pun intended!). :-D

On this particular skirt, I'm probably going to have matching dance pants so that it's okay to let the sheerness of the chiffon be, but when I do add in any linings or slips, I would definitely stop at the top of the godets.

My apologies. I was going to take a look at my skirt last night but I came home from the nursing home late with a list of issues that upset me and spent the remainder of my evening sidetracked on putting a letter together to the nursing home.

I will look at the skirt when I get home from work (between 5 & 6 Eastern time) since this is a day a companion is there for alte afternoon and dinner assitance with Mom.

Gosh, it was a long time ago. I used the regular 4-thread stitch. I inserted the godets between panel seams of a dress. I attached the godet to one panel, and I guess I sewed from the bottom to the dot on the godet and probably swerved my serging out to the edge of the seam allowance. Then I pinned the other panel onto the godet and panel and serged the seam from one end to the other. I don't remember it being overly stressful or problematic. Forgiving fabrics for a dance costume help, though.

I work with chiffon a lot, and I have made chiffon skirts with the godet's in the seams and you can do this with the serge or you can do it with a french seams, but tends to be a bit more tricky, but which ever the case I have found that when working with chiffon I always cut bigger or longer than I need, then trim the excess off when I feel it looks right, that way I have plenty of lead way on the situation hope this helps.
