My mother is 83 years old and, after skirmishes with ocular melanoma, numerous breast biopsies, suspected kidney tumor that turned out to be an old, encapsulated blood clot, she's in pretty darned good shape. We go to NYC every May for 4 or 5 days of restaurants, shopping, theater and last year was a little bit harder on her; cabs were a necessity because walking tired her out too much. After seeing how hard a short walk was for her a few weeks ago, I know she's got to get back to exercising to regain and maintain some strength.

For a while she did a water exercise routine, and felt wonderful - strong and energetic - but she's not doing that anymore, and I think she won't bother get into a bathing suit, pack up her tape recorder and the exercise tape and get over to the community pool. It doesn't help that her Significant Other moves as little as possible, while maintaining a barely detectable pulse rate.

Therefore: I need a recommendation for an exercise video or two that I might be able to convince her to use at home. Maybe something with light weights (a bottle of Scotch counts as a weight, right?) or elastic bands. Does anyone know of a good one?

Where are we going, and what am I doing in this handbasket?

Hi Karla!
It's too bad that your mother won't go-- Silver Sneakers is a very good program for Seniors, just for them!
Maybe if you drop in, they might know of an exercise video or two, eh...

Not a video, Karla, but I can recommend this book: Feeling Good: Strength Training with Your Significant Elder, written by a trainer at my gym who works mostly with seniors and who is a geniunely good guy. There's a free preview chapter posted at SignificantElder.com.

Sit and Be Fit is a program for seniors which airs on the PBS station here ... do you get WUSF? Anyway, they have videos too at their website, plus other general info.

Well, first of all I am glad you are asking about your Mom and aren't referring to yourself as a "senior"!!! I was going to recommend the same program as Debbie. I have seen it while flipping through the channels and it seems pretty doable for "seniors".

I recommend sitandbefit.com or sitandbefit.org. RN Mary Ann Wilson has been doing senior fitness on PBS for years and has over 62 million viewers. It isn't ALL sitting by any means, but I have done her workouts and felt much better, been impressed. She even has finger exercises to keep the hands nimble. She is gold, IMHO, and the DVD's are of reasonable cost.

LOL. You're just nervous because I'm only a few weeks older than you. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

Johnny Walker? Dewar's? Cutty Sark? A lightweight and mostly painless exercise.

What about Leslie Sansone walking exercise tapes? Leslie does in home walking only and she has some for seniors. I'm not sure if they are all this way, but the ones I have are 1 mile, 2 miles, & 3 miles (each mile on mine takes about 15 minutes), but maybe ones for seniors are at a slower pace. I really like Leslie - she's the only one I've been able to stick with and I think it's because it's walking (and variations of walking - ie side step, knee lifts, & kicking out front) and not a bunch of jumping around. She has a website too so you can see what she has to offer - Leslie Sansone.

The Maccallan is a great single malt. A little pricey, but worth it. Hoisting a glass is probably considered a weight bearing exercise - at least if you're Scottish.
