Date: 2/15/08 3:03 PM I was at my local Babylock dealer yesterday picking up my Evolve (combination serger/coverstitch) from being serviced and saw that they had binding attachments for it. I bought one because I have been a bit unclear as to whether a "regular" binding attachment would work on this machine since it is a combo serger/coverstitch. I got it home and opened it up and am now not sure it is what I am wanting. I mainly want this for knit bindings. The thing is called a "double fold bias binder", though, and the papers that come with it talk about using woven fabric. There is no mention of knit fabrics at all. Did I get the wrong thing? This is what I bought. If you look at the rest of the things listed on the Babylock site as going with the Evolve, nothing else seems to be the right thing. What do you think? |

Date: 2/15/08 4:51 PM The Evolve binder is for wovens. But ... I have read of some Evolve owners using it (successfully) for knit binding. Since you now own it, why not just try it out with some test scraps? Don't forget to increase your differential. ------ --

Date: 2/15/08 4:57 PM Debbie (or anybody else), do you think the binders for the regular coverstitch machines would work on the Evolve? Or the industrial binders that some of you use?
DH bought the Evolve for a Christmas present last year as a surprise. If we'd talked about it, I probably would have just gotten a serger and waited a few more years for a separate coverstitch machine. But I'm sure as heck not going to tell him that! :) -- Edited on 2/15/08 4:59 PM -- |

Date: 2/15/08 5:15 PM No, the binder attachments that fit the BLCS will not fit the Evolve. The BLCS has a flat surface across the front of the machine where you attach these binders. The Evolve doesn't.
The binders made by Babylock for the BLCS are the same as the generic industrials on Ebay.
There are also different generics on Ebay that should fit the Evolve. But since I don't have an Evolve, I don't have first-hand experience on that.
Look here, under What is a Binder, near the end of that section. There are photos of the generics which I think should work on the Evolve. ------ --

Date: 2/15/08 5:43 PM I happen to have a BL accessories booklet right here in my hot little hands. Here's what it says:
Belt Loop Binders - CS & Evolve
Double Fold Bias Binder (DFBB for knit/woven) - CS (this is the one like the industrial binders on Ebay)
Double Fold Bias Binder (BLE8-S2 or S3) - CS and Evolve
Elastic Gatherer - CS and Evolve
Fabric Guide - CS and Evolve
Gathering Guide - CS and Evolve
Plain Hemmer - CS and Evolve
Single Downturn Feller (as opposed to Downtown Feller...) - CS and Evolve
Single Fold Bias Binder - Evolve
Hope that helps in some way. -- Edited on 2/15/08 5:44 PM -- ------ Leslie |

Date: 2/16/08 3:09 AM Julia, my machine is a combo too, but another model- Elna 744.
With kind help from PR members I successfully installed and have used a generic e-bay binder. Here is a discussion on this topic:

The binder you bought I happened to have too, tried it once and never after (sorry to say that.).
But I love my industrial binder from e-bay!!! (the one in Debbie pics.) How I lived w/o it?

Date: 2/16/08 11:20 AM I too have a combo machine, Viking 936. I really would like to bind knit fabrics (I love Debbie's work). Does anyone have any suggestion for me. Can I purchase a generic binder, or should I jump in and get a separate CS machine. The cost of the CS only machines are quite high here in So Ca.
Most of my sewing (at least tops) are with knits.
Thanks

Date: 2/16/08 6:38 PM Hi. i have a Janome coverstitch that i have never used. Today i went to buy a clear foot and it was 80.00 so i didn't get it. I can't see since i'm making halters with elastic and turning over and want to use coverstitch. Does anyone know of any cheaper ways to get this overly expensive clear foot? Thanks

Date: 2/16/08 6:52 PM I paid $45 for mine (it was the one that has the rudder, that you can just take out for it to be a clear foot, per suggestion from here) from Kens Sewing Center. Great people to deal with!
Good luck in your search!

Date: 9/7/10 1:47 PM I have an Evole serger. I want to put knit binding on swimsuits and tee shirts. Does the BLE8-S3 work with knits? IU would appreciate the input. Thanks! |
