The Lined Jacket Contest Rules have been set up by the contest committee. I am just stepping in for Jessika who will manage this contest.

Pattern Review’s Lined Jacket Contest
August 1 through August 31, 2008
This is a contest to create a lined jacket.
Rules:
- Jacket must be wearable by a person.
- Jacket must be fully lined.
- Jacket must not have any exposed interior seams.
- Jacket must have sewn on sleeves
- For entry into the contest, there must be a review of your jacket including pictures of both the inside and the outside of the garment. Details on the method you used for creating the jacket will be useful to those voting.
Definition:
A jacket is a garment meant to be worn over another top. It has sewn-in sleeves and may be any length from cropped (midriff) to full length (typically worn as a coat at that length). Being lined means at least 2 layers of fabric and no exposed seams. Bound or otherwise finished but exposed seam allowances do not qualify as lined for this contest.
Clarifications:
- Design details (pockets, lapels, sleeve length, jacket length, etc) are up to the entrant.
- Reversible jackets do not count as lined for this contest.
- Cloaks and capes are not jackets.
- Sleeves may be set-in, raglan, or dropped, but may not be cut-on (dolman or kimono).
- Any type of fasteners for the jacket opening can be used (buttons, zippers, frogs, hook and eye, ties) but are not required.
- Lining may be stitched down to the hem as is typical of a tailored jacket, or may be left loose as is typical of a tailored coat.
- Jacket does not need to be tailored in style. It just needs to be lined.
- Any method that produces a lined jacket with no exposed seams can be used. The lining may be inserted by hand or sewn in by machine; lining may be "bagged"; lining may be quilted to the fashion fabric.
Prizes: $100 and $50 Gift Certificates from Sawyer Brook Fabrics
Voting begins Sep 2nd and ends Sep 11th
Voting guideline suggestions:
- Does the jacket meet the rules criteria (lined jacket)
- Does the review include sufficient information to judge the construction of the jacket?
- Does the construction of the jacket match the declared skill level of the entrant?
- Is the lining fabric appropriate relative to the fashion fabric (weight, type) |

Reply to Deepika Date: 7/25/08 1:38 PM I have one comment on the no exposed seams. Most jacket lining methods, even bagged jackets, have the bottom of the facing exposed. I have seen directions for catch stitching this to the hem or the method that I have always used, I Hong Kong finish this small section and sew it invisibly to the hem. I know of only one machine method that completely covers this facing with the lining. The Chanel method of lining to the bottom of the jacket would also cover this section. But, traditional tailoring methods do leave this section of facing unattached, and thus exposed, to the lining. The same thing applies to the inside of a sleeve vent. The section below the lining is exposed. It can be catch stitched to the hem or it can be bound.

Reply to Nancy K Date: 7/25/08 2:11 PM I know we don't typically pop in here to explain rules, but I want to clarify this before it becomes a BIG issue.
No exposed "Seam Allowances"
This would cover bound seam allowances that are still visible as a seam allowance - ie the armsyce seam.
This doesn't say no exposed fashion fabric, such as at the hem or facing of a jacket.
oh, I see what you're saying Nancy - the 1.5" that is exposed on the facing below the lining hem. Ok, do we need to write an addendum to the rules - is anyone going to be that nit-picky?
What the rule is intended to cover is an unlined jacket where only the yoke is lined and the rest of the seams are bound - or any type of jacket constructions someone might come up with that didn't fully enclose the inner side of the jacket.
Obviously in a traditionally tailored jacket if there is a bit of seam allowance that is exposed that is finished in the traditional manner it is not going to be excluded for that bit.

Not trying to argue for or against since I'm not about to make one ... I'm just curious as to the thinking.
Why is a reversible jacket not a lined jacket? It follows every other rule, doesn't it?------ --

Edited because my original statement was more confusing than the above sentence. Could you please reword the above rule to make it more clear. I had to read it several times before it made sense to me, and I'm still not exactly sure.
Edited because I think I got it. Binding the seam allowances is ok, but it does not mean the jacket is lined.
OK, I'm done.

Date: 7/25/08 11:12 PM I signed up for this contest because I think the stars have aligned themselves properly: I have a 1 1/4 yard piece of moss green Chanel boucle from the PR meetup in Baltimore, a 1 yard piece of green/gold/white foliage-patterned silk charmeuse from my recent PR-friend trip to NY, and McCalls 5007, which I think can be maneuvered to work with slightly less fabric than it calls for. When I bought that silk my fingers were crossed that it matched the boucle, and I put them together tonight and it did! (Picture me dancing around the workroom). Now to scrounge around and gather up the interfacing, buttons and plain lining that I will need for the sleeves, since I didn't buy enough silk to do the sleeve linings to match. ------ Karen
There's always room for one more cat, one more book or one more yard of fabric.

Reply to Karen6790 Date: 7/26/08 9:46 AM Make a short jacket and do an open lay and you may just have enough. The lining is another story if it is only 45" wide. But, you could make the sleeves lining in another fabric. The same for the boucle, if you don't have enough you could make the facings in a complementary fabric. ------ www.nancyksews.blogspot.com Next page>> |
