Date: 7/25/08 9:50 PM My gyn said she wanted to check my blood level of Vitamin D when I went in for my annual two weeks ago. She said she is checking all her patients because they are finding so many women are deficient in Vitamin D which leads to Osteoporosis and apparently is now linked to many other diseases. Mine came back today and they said I am severely deficient! I was very surprised because I take a 1,000 unit supplement every day and have for over a year now. But, I don't get any sun....
Has anyone else had this diagnosis? |

Slate usually does pretty reliable journalism. I haven't read the whole thing, but it might be helpful.
Slate Magazine story on Vit. D deficiency ------ I am going for a level of perfection that is only mine... Most of the pleasure is in getting that last little piece perfect...Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just keep showing up and doing the work.

Date: 7/25/08 10:15 PM Yeah, this is big news now bec they're finding that D is more like a hormone than a vitamin. Almost everybody is deficient, so do get tested and take it. I think it's helping me........

Date: 7/25/08 10:42 PM In the past couple of months there was a feature on the news about Vitamin D deficiency and how it was much more common than thought. I remember one doctor said we need 10 minutes in the sun every day without SPF which blocks absorbing Vitamin D.
MIL has been dizzy the past week or so and remembered reading a recent article about Vitamin D deficiency. The author of the article had been experiencing dizziness and had found she had been deficient of Vit D, which can be a sympton of the deficiency. So MIL was tested this week for Vit D, but was found to be normal. Her dizziness is from fluid in her inner ear. ------ I feed my soul by the stitches I sew.

Date: 7/25/08 11:43 PM This is a spooky post because my dermatologist very recently said I should be tested the next time I have some blood tests. As I'm taking methotrexate for psoriatic arthritis, and now have TWO reasons to keep out of the sun (skin damage and the meds),she thought it would be a good idea. Had the tests last week but don't know the results yet. I also take 2x1gram fish oil a day for heart rhythm irregularities,so I thought I'd be well and truly covered. (I'm the one rattling as I walk along ! ) ------

Date: 7/26/08 7:03 AM I have been taking 1,000 units of vitamin D3 for over a year now and I also take fish oil. This is why I was so surprised that I was deficient. I am obese and did read that obesity can make it difficult for the body to use vitamin D supplements. I am hoping that if I make an effort to spend more time in the sun, that will help. |

Date: 7/26/08 8:55 AM I have a mild deficiency and so am now taking Vitamin D supplements which are prescription strength. A friend of mine who is a family doctor told me that some of her patients come in with NO Vitamin D at all in their systems! They are folks who were obese and got bypasses, so if you are one of those folks, get tested.
I laughed at first, calling the Vitamin D deficiency the "disease du jour". But, it is strange and mysterious and not so good. I have been by turns a sun worshipper as a small kid and a mole as an adult (Stay out of the sun! It will kill you! Eeeek!). Moderation, that seems to be a point that we all hate to make. Heh. ------ Let's...BUILD A HUT! (or a yert).

Date: 7/26/08 10:51 AM Another thing we can blame our cars for, I suppose. Between cars, malls and climate controlled homes, we don't spend much time outside anymore, even those of us who live in moderate climates. A baby step I am trying to take is parking farther away from my destination. Often it is easier to find a spot a little farther away and those extra minutes of walking I figure will add up over time both in steps walked and sun exposure.
The trouble with supplements is that they are both notoriously non-standardized and difficult for the body to absorb. We as a culture would always love a "magic bullet" approach where we can take a pill to make up for our inadequacies (I know I certainly do!) but Mother Nature sometimes doesn't go along with this theory at all. ------ http://bgballroom.wordpress.com to follow the progress on my next ballgown. |

Date: 7/26/08 2:10 PM What burns my butt (besides a flame "this" high) is that my insurance company wouldn't pay for prescription Vit D I had to take several years ago, but will pay for it beginning this month. Of course, I no longer need the prescription strength.
The deficiency was found during a routine blood test and I had to take 50,000 units once a week for a couple of months. Now, I take 1300 units a day and I've been fine. One of the side effects, that I didn't realize until it was "fixed," was mild depression. It made me wonder how many people are prescribed antidepressants when all they need is a good shot of Vit D?
