Two years ago, I bought my niece a Build a Bear Workshop Bear. My sister is a little tired of buying new outfits for the bear. Has anyone sewed clothes for these bears? Do they take the same size as 18" dolls. If so, I can get patterns from the Big 4. Maybe there is another source for patterns.

TIA

I think some styles would work! DD has both AG dolls and Build a Bears and she swaps out some of their clothing. Bottoms (skirts & pants) seem to be ok, but the neck on the BAB clothes are bigger/wider than the AG clothes. So if it's a woven top, it might be tricky. But hey, if it's too tight at least they won't complain! :D

Could you borrow a few basic pieces from the bear's wardrobe to use as patterns?

In 2003, Simplicity put out a pattern for sewing a similar type bear (they called it "Sew-a-Bear") and 2 additional patterns for clothing for the bears.

To make it even more interesting, some of these patterns have two different Simplicity pattern numbers. Go figure.

I found auctions for all 3 Sew-A-Bear patterns on eBay by searching for the phrase:

Sew-A-Bear

eBay search for sew-a-bear

(Right now, there's an auction for all three patterns in one group: item # 330265634096 )

The basic bear pattern (4623 -- also known as 5278) is still for sale as an OOP pattern on the Simplicity web site. Includes 2 sizes of bears and patterns for shorts and T-shirts (for both size bears).OOP Bear pattern available on Simplicity web site

Other patterns were for clothing only (for both sizes of Sew-A-Bears):
5280 - Ballerina tutu, Bridal dress and veil, Soccer outfit, Cheerleader outfit.

5283 (also seen as 4624): Party dress, Swim suit with coverup and visor hat, T-shirt and shorts, PJ/Clown costume. Includes pattern for sandals.

I know I am replying to a post that is two years ago but i think the build a bear stores are still very popular. therefore I though I'd share this blogger----made by rae. This is her website....http://www.made-by-rae.com/2008/04/free-itty-bitty-baby-dress-pattern.html . I have tried her baby dress pattern for a bunny purchased from build a bear store. VERY SURPRISINGLY, the pattern fits the stuffed bunny perfectly. I will try to upload some of the bunny photos later.

We also found that the old patterns for Cabbage Patch doll clothes also fit the bear we made at Build A Bear.

I used the 18" doll patterns(American Girl). I added a 1/2" to the side seams and the folded seams. The height is right. I made pants, t-shirts, Shorts, PJ's, tank tops, long sleeve tops(raglan sleeve) and short sleeve dress shirts. It works with a little adjustments here and there:) I was originally going to use Cabbage Patch doll patterns but I must have purge those patterns many years ago and they are now discontinued:(
