Date: 5/4/04 1:16 PM I was thinking back on all the really dumb mistakes I've made sewing, especially as a beginner, and I thought it might provide some laughs.
My worst: When cutting a knit top, I put the cut edges together instead of the selvage so the stretch went in the wrong direction. I almost dislocated a shoulder trying to put the thing on!
Even worse? That wasn't the last time I made that mistake!
Anyone else want to be the butt of jokes and add their dumb mistakes? ------

I noticed the other day when sorting out my lingerie, that the camisole and boy shorts I made from stretch lace aren't as good as I thought....the lace is all on back to front....I've never noticed before. ------

The latest was on a pair of capris I made sunday night. The pattern called for a back zip. I moved it to the side, but ended up putting it in the wrong place--side back to side back I think. Whatever it was, it was *way* wrong and I felt like a complete moron.

I have set in the wrong sleeve on several occasions and twice have set the correct sleeve in backwards, now I put a piece of masking tape on the wrong side & mark it left or right.
This usually helps, but not always.

Date: 5/4/04 2:07 PM I'm with Izzy. After sewing some sleeves in SIDEWAYS, I've begun marking right/wrong sides with scotch tape onto which I've drawn directional arrows and notes -- this way up, dummy! ------

Date: 5/4/04 2:16 PM I'll add two confessions--I was in such a hurry to put a pair of elastic waist trousers together that I didn't pay attention to what I was doing--could not figure out why they didn't fit until I realized that I'd assembled them so that one leg was two front pieces sewn together and one leg was two back pieces sewn together.
And--early in my sewing career I had nearly finished completing a dress when I realized that the entire garment was sewn wrong side out--and it wasn't a 'pretty' wrong side either!

My worst lately is failing to prewash. I usually do this before I even bring the fabric to my sewing, but I had bought an entire bolt of $1/yd knit and used some without prewashing. When I finally did wash some, I knew I was in trouble. The size 7 jacket and shirt I made for dd now looks about 2T-3T. The good news is that it shrunk proportionately, so once I redo the zipper it will work for my neice. I'm even making her a little wardrobe capsule around it! |

Date: 5/5/04 3:47 AM Well, I bought my Pfaff shortly after arriving in the UK, and have hated putting in zips with it from the beginning. (I had no lessons with this machine as I bought it at a military store.) The zipper foot was shaped strangely-like a capital M! Basically, the needle could go between one 'pair' of legs or the other, but this meant that the third one was always trying to ride over the zipper coils! I was frustrated, I cursed, I searched the owner's manual for hints, in vain. I even took the zipper class, and all of Colleen's help didn't clue me in. I was saved by learning to do invisible zips with a different foot.
Then, looking carefully at the foot for the 1,000th time, it dawned on me. Turning the foot around, so the the 'M' shaped legs faced the back, my zipper foot rode to the side of the coils with a little inset where the needle went as do all zipper foots everywhere. Worked like a charm. And boy, did I feel dumb.  ------

Date: 5/5/04 1:15 PM My most often committed and biggest mistake is skipping the "make a sample" step. I get cocky with buttonholes, embroideries, and decorative stitches. Last night, I tried bobbinwork, which worked great, but then I was all full of myself, so I skipped the sample making step for a decorative stitch. It came out awful, right dab in the middle of the bag, which is a gift.
Tonight, I get to cover it up with a ribbon and do some decorative stitching on that.
Sheesh, you'd think I'd learn. ------
