Date: 10/24/08 11:09 AM I have been wondering if the term "swayback adjustment" is just an euphemism for you have a huge butt. Can anyone clarify for me?

Date: 10/24/08 11:41 AM I think you can have a swayback without having a big booty. But the fact that there would be a shorter than usual, and much more pronounced inward slope from the mid/lower back to the behind area makes the two problems similar on a fitting level - or how the garment will hang. Both will usually cause a bunching of fabric right above the booty. But, since you see swayback problems even with tops NOT attached to a skirt, they are different as well!
I used a swayback adjustment on a two piece dress I made DD who is not swayback, but has a big butt. I ripped out the seam going across the back waist, and tucked up the bunching fabric and sewed it back. I still had to accomodate for the booty by making shorter, bigger darts and let out the side seams. I probably could have also increased the center back seam over the seat ara as well, tapering to normal where the skirt attached to the waist.
I believe making a fisheye dart in the pattern helps as well, to remove the bunching.
Just my 2 cents - and I obtained that info from the real experts here at PR, so I don't take any credit. I had never had to do swayback or big butt alteration till recently.

Date: 10/24/08 1:07 PM I have a swayback, but a flat butt. I think the swayback part just refers to the relative location of the back waist to the upper and lower spine when viewed from the side. But I could be wrong. I've never seen a consistent description from all sources... ------

Date: 10/24/08 3:46 PM In my case they go hand in hand, but really a swayback has to do with the spinal curve. My back arches more than it should. Sort of extra hollow.
When flat on my back I cannot flatten my back onto the ground. There is simply no way my back can make that last bit.
From X-rays I know that it is a case of my last vertebrae being fused at an odd angle. According to my chiropractor about 1 in 6 people have it to a more or lesser extend. I am certainly not an exceptionally bad case as long as I keep my exercise up. My back is easily thrown off balance by bad posture.
It often results in a butt that looks bigger and in my case with wide hip actually is.

Date: 10/24/08 6:45 PM No the two are different. Sway back is actually a medical condition where the spine curves too far inwards at the lower back causing pain.
A sway back adjustment to a pattern adjusts the pattern to compensate for the inward curvature of the spine. HTH ------
