I love Rick Owens, but not the price! How would you make this? |

Date: 11/2/08 2:34 PM I love Rick Owens, though nothing of his comes in my size or fits my budget! I also can't figure out how to copy this. Any one have any ideas?

Reply to Nancy K Date: 11/2/08 3:37 PM That's a super top, didn't know Rick Owen, but going to browse a bit further. I see a seam at the left, and think it's a twist somehow. I'm printing it and will do some draping, it intrigues me and would like one too! ------ http://sigridsewingprojects.blogspot.com/ Next page>> |

Reply to Sigrid. Date: 11/2/08 4:32 PM Sigrid and Nancy,
If you search the site further and find a greyish green version of the same top, you'll see that there also seems to be a seam on the model's lower right bodice, too - at an angle near her right breast.
I'm also thinking that maybe the on the model's right shoulder, there might be two layers of the knit top: one that serves as a "regular" shoulder and possibly, the draped layer joined on top of the regular shoulder seam - but I'm not sure about this. Also, if you look at the BACK of the greyish green top, on the same model's right shoulder, there seems to be a little triangular shaped bit that seems to be positioned lower than a "regular" shoulder seam.
It is a gorgeous top. I'd jump right on it, but think that I cannot "pull this off" with a 34F (90F in Europe) bust. With all the yummy draping, I think I'd look HUGE. But it would be exciting to see that top on either of you, Nancy or Sigrid. --Lily -- Edited on 11/2/08 4:33 PM -- ------ Lily Next page>> |

Reply to Nancy K Date: 11/2/08 4:49 PM Nancy - there's a site I reviewed recently which is authored by a Canadian designer. He provides drafting advice on designer clothes. He says on his site, 'if there's anything you'd like me to help with, let me know'. I think this would be right up his ally since it's fairly complex. He recently put up drafting and sewing instructions for this top for instance:
The address of his blog is: http://wkdesigner.wordpress.com/ and I think what he does is fantastic.

Date: 11/2/08 5:05 PM I'd start out with a cowl-necked long-sleeved t-shirt pattern (or by adding a cowl neck to a regular T). The front drapey piece I'd make as sort of reverse facing. Same neckline, and on the right-hand side, same lines at the shoulder, armscye & side seam as the front piece.
On the left side, I think there must be some gathering at the shoulder to make it fall that way across the front of the chest. If I was drafting it, I'd flat-draft the right side, extend the shoulder on the left side and then drape until I got the effect I wanted.
And don't forget the extra long sleeves! Next page>> |

Reply to Nancy K Date: 11/2/08 6:02 PM Your Rick Owens top looks like a tough puzzle. Butterick 4347 Version D bears a slight resemblence to the designer original, but it's very much simplified. The Butterick pattern lacks the draping at the collar, has a criss cross that's about six inches higher, and includes a center front seam. But even if you just looked at the line drawing on the Butterick website, it might give you some insights about how the more complicated original.
I know nothing about patternmaking, but I definitely see the seams on the right shoulder that Lily spotted and also on the sleeves. There's a lot of draped fabric in that top, especially at the center. Vogue 9771 , which is sewn on the bias, has a similar draped front. My guess is that a paper pattern for this top would look like an inverted triangle -- very broad at the shoulders and tapering as you go down.
Vogue 1056 has a front twist and unusual seams near the shoulders. It might offer some clues too. ------ The essence of life is statistical improbability on a colossal scale.

Date: 11/2/08 7:15 PM Lovely top, intriguing construction....and as a sewist I'm always awed by the *intentionally raw finish*......maybe oneday I will be brave enough or in enough of a hurry! Next page>> |

Reply to MareeAlison Date: 11/2/08 9:35 PM I have explored this site a bit, I think thanks to your link. I hadn't seen his comment about helping. That's a great idea.
It is certainly beyond my limited drafting skills. -- Edited on 11/2/08 9:38 PM -- ------ www.nancyksews.blogspot.com Next page>> |

Reply to lilyofthevalley Date: 11/2/08 9:47 PM I am not sure that I'd look good in it either, but I am intrigued by the complexity and beauty of the draping and it has to be the most sophisticated deconstruction I've seen. ------ www.nancyksews.blogspot.com Next page>> |

No doubt, the top *is* stunning. Ah, to be young again and have a defined waist.
