That can't be true.

Bumping this up for you too

I have heard there is great fabric shopping in Singapore
and it is not so far from Australia & NZ. Many travellers stop over in Singapore on their way to other destinations.

Do tell us what we are missing and the great places to shop when we stop over ?
Do you have good access to sewing patterns and magzines like BWOF ?

Thanks for the bumps everyone

I'm still figuring out the local fabric places. I would say that it's definitely variety over quality here. There's a lot but I don't think you can compare with say European fabric quality wise. Also, since Spore is a tropcial country, most fabrics are light muslin/cotton types.

For the usual, head over to chinatown.
Looking for batik, go to kampung clam or arab street.
Little India is where you go for the beautiful indian saris.

Pattern wise, i haven't seen any patterns in Singapore at all. I'm hoping to find them myself. Kinda of sick of getting 1.99 patterns and paying $10 shipping.

Thanks for the shopping tips.
Have you visited Spotlight in Singapore?
I looked at their current catalogue and it seems different to the one here in Oz.

i've only visited it once some 5-6 years ago. to me, it's more of a crafty place where you can get a lot of variety of things but nothing there is good quality. the yarns (I'm a knitter too) are scratchy and made of synthetic fibers, the fabrics are (the last time i've visited it. i'm not sure what it's like now.) are all the very thin muslin types, some printed, some aren't but you can tell that the thing probably won't last 3 washes.

i didn't find any patterns the last time i check but it seems like they have some now so there might be an improvement. I'm going to go check it out and then come back and post about it.

I have found that some of the fabric at SL here in Australia, is not the best quality either. I bought two pieces of cotton voile that did fall apart after a few washes.
It looks like SL in Spore have Burda and NL patterns on sale ATM

I'm back from a spotlight trip. Some things have changed since I last went there. Let's see.

There's a lot more variety in terms of cloth now. There's even some faux fur and other weird/novelty fabrics going on there. In terms of selection, there seems to be more than what I remember. It's also better organised now. I think the place is also bigger.

Quality wise, still not the best but it's improved quite a bit. It used to be just a crafty place(no offense to crafty pple) but I think there's more selection got garment sewers now.

Pattern wise, they have burda, simplicity, butterick but I didn't see any vogue. Price is more expensive than Chinatown so I would say pop over to chinatown first and get most of what you want there. save spot light for things you cannot find and outrageous fabrics and other embellishments like buttons, trimmings(they have, i believe, a wider selection) ribbons and things like that.

I'm resurrecting this older post in the hopes of finding other Singapore sewists!

I'm new to PR (lurked for a bit before joining) and would LOVE to "meet" other sewing enthusiasts from this sunny island, trade tips and generally chat about all things sewing in Singapore.

Edited to add:
Here are my favourite Singapore sewing stores -

1. Malin Textiles in Chinatown
- GREAT for Japanese fabric & Jo is very friendly

2. NicoleXavier in Chinatown
- NICE European fabric, including a selection of Liberty prints, Spanish lace and Italian cotton. My credit card works out really hard at this shop so I try to visit as infrequently as possible. LOL!!
- It's the only air-conditioned store in the complex!

3. Golden Dragon in Chinatown
- I get my Clover fix here
- Good selection of fabric from Japan, but I find the prices at Malin Textiles to be lower

4. Quilts & Calicoes at Tanglin Mall
- The best selection (IMO) of American fabric (eg. Amy Butler) & some Oliver + S sewing patterns too
- Fabric costs upwards of S$22 a metre, so I buy very sparingly here

5. Poppy Fabric at Arab Street
- My absolute favourite shop for silk (dupioni, sandwashed, Indian and Thai)
- Fabulous selection and super service

6. Liberty Silks at Arab Street
- Big selection of Japanese (Sevenberry) cotton
- Lovely Italian silk can be found at the back of the store ... but be prepared to paaaayyyy

7. Collezione La Prima at Arab Street
- Big selection of Japanese (Sevenberry) cotton; big rivalry with Liberty silks has caused the prices to go lower ... hooray! It's now S$10 a metre, down from the previous $12-$14 a metre
- Nice but small selection of linen too
- Best known for their Italian and Korean silks

8. Mustafa Centre in Little India
- This is where I get my sari fix and they also have a good selection of Batik -- both pre-packaged and by the metre

9. Spotlight at Plaza Singapura
- This is where I get my paper patterns (including Vogue -- you need to ask at the counter cos they hide the Vogue book since it gets stolen all the time)
- This is also the only place I've found double-sided satin ribbon
- The quilting cottons section has improved dramatically and the odd gem can be found at the other fabric sections too

There are other stores I frequent, but I really need to pay attention to their names! I know where they are, but haven't a clue what they're called. LOL!
