I am new to Pfaff but I would like a Pfaff 2170 equivalent as a second machine to complement my Bernina 730. I found a nice 2140 for a good price that has not been upgraded but it doesn't seem to have all of the original accessories with it. What would I need to be sure to have in order to upgrade it via the web and also to transfer designs to it? Ultimately, I'd want to send designs via USB. Would I be better off to find a machine that has already been upgraded and has all of its original accessories, even if it costs more? Thank you for any help you can offer.

You would need to make sure that the cable that goes from the machine to your computer is with the machine and that it had the file assistant disk. I have a 2170 that has a serial/network looking card on one end an usb on the other. the file assistant cd allows the transfer of designs. also the same slot uses embroidery cards, if you were going to purchase the cards. I don't remember if the 2140 has the usb cable or the serial port cable. If it has the latter you may be able to use some reader/writer box and blank cards as the easiest way.

There are updates on the pfaff website but I think the last update was May 07 with no more upgrades for the 2100 series.

Thank you for your help. If the machine doesn't have the file assistant, then I would need to buy an amazing box to get the designs to the machine, correct? I know the machine has the usb cable for design transfer but the owner does not think he has the file assistant any longer. Without the file assistant, can I do anything with just the cable? Can the file assistant be purchased? Thank you for all of your help.

I think you should be able to get a disk you will probably need the earlier version I think its called 3d assist. I am not a home this week so I can't check the detail for you but I will post it when I get home. You shouldn't have too much trouble getting it if you want and if you are getting the pfaff reader/writer box a copy comes with it as it came with mine. Shouldn't be too hard to find on ebay or the like. Price on the ulitmate or amazing box may be better but worth looking into

A lot of the 2140 and 2144's (including my dearly departed) really needed a new needle assembly because the needle kept falling out when embroidering. I had to tighten after every thread change and sit and watch it so I could press the stop button at the first sign of trouble. It did beautiful embroidery however.

I have the 2140 I upgraded it to the 2170 via internet from the pfaff site. Yes the 2140 came with a card with a differn't end to it. I went to my local dealer and bought the new one it works the same but usb out put. I also bought the 3d suite it has everything you need for transfering designs. I also have the customizer which was recomended buy the dealer to me first before i bought the 3d suite off of ebay. Check ebay too you also might find what you need that is missing.
thanks

Thank you all for your kind assistance. I found a great dealer 2 hours from me who said he would upgrade the machine for me, if it needed it. He also can get the pieces I need for a reasonable price. The man who is selling it said he'd check with the dealer who serviced the machine to find out if it needs to be updated. He has all of the service receipts so I am hoping the machine is in fine condition. Again, thank you all.

Alice,

would you mind sharing some dollar figures for this machine? What is a reasonable price for the 2140? Is this a new machine or a reconditioned one?

Thanks,

Claudia

Claudia:

I have found several 2140/2170 and 2144/2170 machines with prices ranging from $1500-$3500. Most of them seem to be running between $1700 and $2000. All of them are used and come from private owners. I hope this helps.
