Date: 1/8/09 10:20 AM This thread is for anyone who wants to join us in the one garment a month sew along. We had great response in 2008 and we are ready to continue it this year too.
Here are a few guidelines. Since this an informal sew-along there are not many rules but here are few you should stick to.
1. The project should be started and finished in the same month.
2. The project should be a wearable garment (accessories will not be counted)
3. The project can be for yourself/friend/family/charity etc but it should still be a garment.
4. If the project is new, a review is desirable but not required.
5. When you are ready to show us the garment of the month, click on post reply on this topic, change the subject to Month - Finished Project and post your project there. By doing it this way, its easy for me to find the finished projects and post them to the final tally.
Last year each month we had about 15-20 people who managed to finish a project each month. This year my challenge is double that. I am hoping atleast 30 of you will finish a garment each month.
Here are some tips I posted last year.
1. I have NO time.
Solution: If you think about it, it's not too hard to take out 4-5 hours from a 30 day month.
2. Nothing fits me, what's the point?
Solution: That's why you sew! We are all real women. Nobody has the perfect body. But we can't give up. If you have problems fitting the bust, start there. Make a shell top. If you can, take some classes. PR online classes are really easy to fit in your schedule.
3. I have so many patterns/fabrics. I don't know what to make.
Solution: We've all been there. Overwhelmed by the choices we have. Narrow it down to a few and post here. We'll try to help you make a decision.
4. I started something but did not finish.
Solution: This is encouraging. You did start but if you werent able to finish in the same month, don't let it become a UFO. Continue working on it and you WILL finish. And I promise next month will be better.
5. My sewing room is a mess.
Solution: Ok so you need more than 4-5 hours now. But take the FlyLady approach. Set your timer to 15 minutes and clean your sewing room. After 15 minutes STOP! Walk away. Don't think about it. Repeat this every day until you are happy with the way it looks. Chances are that when you are done you will sew not one but many garments in that month.
6. I have been sewing, just NOT for myself
Solution: You know... the more I think about it the more I want to say, thats OK, you can still include it in the one garment a month sew along but as long as you make sure that you sew for yourself every other month at least
7. I did sew but not garments
Solution: It's still better than not sewing at all. And if it's for gift giving that's alright. But if you find yourself avoiding garments because of fit or any other reason (try to ask yourself why!) then it's time you gave garments a shot!
The whole point of this sew along is to motivate. So I may come across as "pushy" but I REALLY want you guys to sew! I've noticed that I am a lot happier since I started this sew along because it's guiding me to sew every month and I am forced to take the time out for it.
If you TRY, YOU CAN DO IT!

Date: 1/8/09 10:48 AM Great! I loved this thread last year. I only joined in mid summer but found it very motivational and managed every month but one I think.
I encourage others to join as well. Low pressure but motivating at the same time. I have a new top half way done and so should be able to get my January garment finished on Saturday. Next page>> |

Date: 1/8/09 10:51 AM OK. Count me in.
I am one of those who has too many UFOs and sews non-garments to avoid fit issues. This is the year (finally) that I'm going to make myself a nice wardrobe, even if it's just t-shirts that actually fit...
Thanks for the motivation, and the teensiest bit of "tough love"!

Reply to Deepika Date: 1/8/09 11:24 AM I am in. I have found it hard to find time for garments lately because of other sewing and this sounds like just the right motivator! Next page>> |

Date: 1/8/09 11:41 AM I am so exciting for lots of sewing in the new year, and looking forward to seeing everyone's "garments of the month." This month I am hoping to tackle pants, with the help of Pattern Master Boutique. Next page>> |

Date: 1/8/09 11:49 AM In the last year I've done too much fantasising and too much shopping and not enough sewing, for me or anybody else. My big excuse was the messy sewing room, but that is finally clean and organized (very proud of myself!) so it's time to get down to biz-ness! My garment this month may be a UFO from November just to get me going, but after that, watch out :-) ------ Tricia

The advantage of being a beginner is, nobody has told you "That can't be done." This is also the disadvantage of being a beginner. Next page>> |

Date: 1/8/09 1:24 PM I'm thinking about joining too. One garment a month really should be manageable.
It's still early January and I already started sewing some pants. Next page>> |

Subject: January - Finished Project Date: 1/8/09 1:59 PM I finished my January project: a blouse for DD. My last project was a sweater for me, which I started last month and finished in the first days of January. I also started my next project: a pleated neck camie for myself. I am within guidelines of sewing for myself once in a while. I will post a review of both gaments on Sunday.
ETA: here is the review of DD's shirt. -- Edited on 1/11/09 9:42 AM -- ------ Fabric bought in 2009: 30 yds
Fabrc sewn in 2009: 19 yds
Fabric stash: 145 yds
3 Garments IN and 6 Garments OUT
