My son gave us a bread machine for Christmas. My wife was not that happy about it, but she won't be using it anyway, as I'm the chief cook and bottle-washer. So I've used it several times now, and I really like this thing. It's just about the same as having an automatic washer and dryer is for clothes. Dump in ingredients, hit the start button, and go away. Bread in 3 hours.

How do others feel about this device?

We use ours from time to time. I don't like the size of the loaves--my mom said she has started using the machine to make the dough, then bake the bread in a normal pan.

otherwise, I like it. Better than yucky ol Wonderbread.

I love my bread machine! I asked for one last year and my DH, who has a rule about no necessary gifts, was surprised. But he came through and got one.

It makes terrific bagel dough. My bagels are lumpy but tasty (hmmm, that sounded a little off color!).

LOVE it!!! I don't buy store bread anymore. Anything that can sit on the counter for 3 weeks and not mold just kinda scares me. I KNOW what I'm putting in our bread. Plus, it's SO much cheaper to make and tastes so yummy. Storebought bread (even the "good" stuff) just takes funky to me anymore.

Makes killer pizza dough, too! Mmmmm.

BTW, you can get great deals on bread flour and yeast at Sam's...I would imagine Costco, too. Literally pennies per loaf when you buy the ingredients in bulk.

Trouble is if you don't use it fairly quickly, bread flour can get old and not rise as well.

I love mine. It would be one of the first appliances I replaced if the house burned down. I do think the bread is nicer if I make the dough in the machine and then bake it in the oven. We get through lots of bread and it is easier and more convenient to keep flour in the pantry and make a loaf than to either keep shopping or have the freezer full of bread. I love pizza doughs in it too.

We love ours - like others have mentioned, we mostly use ours for mixing and kneading the dough, then bake it in the oven so we can shape it however we want (to make rolls or breadsticks or pizza crust or whatever) or to have bread that looks more "breadlike." I've made some nice 100% whole wheat bread with mine when I never got that to work doing it by hand (maybe lacking in patience..). Enjoy!

Oh, and about ingredients, you can get jars of bread machine or quick rise yeast if you haven't seen those yet - much cheaper than the packets. Also, if you want to make whole grain bread, some vital wheat gluten flour will help it rise better. It should have directions on the package, but I think ours says 1 tablespoon of gluten flour per cup of whole grain flour.

The only thing I don't like is cleaning the pan - ours has 4 little rivets in the bottom that tend to collect stuff and have to be cleaned out with a toothpick, but otherwise there's not really any drawback, except for having to store the thing somewhere.

Bread machines are great. We have had one for years and the only bread we buy from the store now, is Sourdough French bread. We could make it ourselves, but getting the right starter is difficult. There is a difference in starters as to the taste of the bread they produce. We are on our second breadmaker and my wife makes a couple of loaves a week. Love the variety that you can produce. Add grains and nuts and seeds and whatnot and you get a totally different bread. You can even use it to make pizza dough.

I've had a bread machine for years and use it in cycles. I purchase Bob's Red Mill bread mix...............too lazy to make my own, I guess. Love his rye bread. I get it for $1.99 but have seen it sell for more. Here's a link to the website. They also have lots of organic flours, but I think you have to type in organic in the search window.

I don't use it alot for sliced bread, but I make alot of dough with it. Pizza crust, honey wheat rolls, garlic pull aparts, focaccia bread to name a few.
