which brands are interchangeable

I have a Viking Sapphire 870Q, for which extra feet are quite expensive and have tried feet from my Brother Super Ace and they fit.

I have since bought more Brother feet and am now wondering if there are any other brands that would fit the Sapphire.

The feet from my Viking Iris also fit although they are a little narrower as the Iris has narrower feed dogs.

Does anyone have any idea if any other brands would be compatible?

I can't help you out but this is a fascinating thread to have opened. Maybe it will build up a cross-reference guide of sorts for owners of machines with expensive feet. I would have never guessed any of them would be interchangeable.

Yes, a great topic! I used to be a Viking Girl, and the feet were crazily expensive.

I've pinned this as a reference topic so it won't get lost!

I know Nancy's notions used to sell a lot of generic feet also Clotilde. And had adapters for most machines that needed them.

You know what? The Viking feet might be expensive (they are) but they are worth it. For some reason they seem particular engineered to do the task. Just my two cents worth, and I have had Kenmore, Janome, and Pfaff feet. Good feet, but the Viking feet are making thier particular tasks so much easier. Try some from SewingMachine221Sale where the prices are lower and the service is excellent. Just yesterday I got two more from him. My third order. I use the send-a-check-option, but he takes Paypal.

BUT, just so you know - I do find that some Brother feet fit and work on my Janome horizontal machines.

Great post. I'm thinking of upgrading from my Viking 980...but it came with 10 feet, and the idea of losing them makes me crazy.

I only have experience with Viking and Brother/Babylock. I've noticed that the Brother/Babylock feet will fit on the Viking with a little play in the connection. The Viking feet will not fit on the Brother/Babylock machines because the ankle is wider.
Brother and Babylock are completely interchangeable.

I found that i was wary using the brother feet on my janome the binder kind of fits, but the needle hole on the plates don't quite line up.I bought all my feet again for the janome.they are reasonable in price so it wasn't too much to replace (over time).

I still love the machine feet for bernina,I wish other companies would use that type of system, and they work brilliantly.I just bought the clear freemotion foot, for my B 807,it was $40au,I paid more for the Janome freemotion foot.

I have been a Viking woman since taking a sewing course 25 years ago and loved sewing on the Vikings, so I bought one. I have a second one now and can use most of the feet that I acquired over the years. They last are are worth the money imop. I was test drove a Brother before I bought my present machine and one of my issues was the quality of the feet on the Brother. My dealer gives a 20% discount on accessories if you bought the machine from her.

Glenj, it is interesting that the binder does not quite fit properly between your Janome and Brother. Many of the feet according to some of the websites state the feet are interchaneable between the brands and I also thought that my Janome binder did not sit right on my Brother Q.
I didn't notice a differentce in the hole in the needle plates as you found but I did see where the newer Brother machines are advertized as having a 7 point feed dog system like the Janomes have and like my Janome Kenmore has. My Innovis Q however has a 6 point feed and not the 7 feed system and I think that mght make the difference. Other than the binder, I also found a difference in the walking feet between the two machines. I haven't tried switching any of the other feet between the two brands though.
