Date: 3/28/09 3:22 PM Over the years, I've had good fortune with the lightbulbs for my Lily 550. Each one has lasted for several years.....until.... (you knew that was coming, didn't you?) The last one self-destructed after only a few months, so I was without backup stock last night. Today I drove 35 minutes south to the Viking store inside Joann's to restock, only to be told they were out. Yeah, they're moving the warehouse from Cleveland to (Tennessee?) and they aren't shipping, blah, blah, blah. They were nice enough to call another store - the one that's 35 minutes west of me; they had them and would hold 3 of them for me until I got there. I picked them up without incident, got home, then looked at the box. Box? They had always been loose, and lovingly placed inside a tiny plastic bag in the past.....and now I know why. Do you know what these babies are? Philips Standard Automotive Lighting. Do you know how many auto stores I drove past on my Joann's safari today? Save yourself some time and aggravation. The box reads Philips 12V Signaling Lamp 4117810-03. I don't need no stinkin' warehouse shipment any more. ------ “Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig.” -Robert Heinlein and Ann's father. Thanks for the reminder, Ann.
Where are we going, and what am I doing in this handbasket?

Date: 3/28/09 4:06 PM Thank you very much, Karla. I have a 550, 555, and a Viking 1+. My Viking dealer disappeared three years ago, I have no backup bulbs, and have been preparing myself, daily, for a mass blackout. You've saved the day! (While I'm at the auto store, think I'll buy some windshield ice scrapers for next Winter.) Thanks again, Lily ------ Lily |

Date: 3/28/09 4:25 PM Lily, you are exactly the kind of Viking owner I had hoped would read this information. I hope that the bulbs are readily available at auto stores. Let me know, will you please? ------ “Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig.” -Robert Heinlein and Ann's father. Thanks for the reminder, Ann.

Date: 3/28/09 4:30 PM Do what I did. Buy a new machine. Okay, so the entire computer board went on my Lily too, but doesn't it sound decadent to say "well, the light bulb was pooched, so I bought a new machine"?!!
But, I wish I had that info when my Lily was alive! I went for soo long without a lightbulb as I couldn't get a replacement. -- Edited on 3/28/09 4:32 PM -- ------ Connie Bontje

Let me know, will you please? Yes, I will let you know, Karla. And even if the auto store doesn't have them in stock, I'll order a boxful for the future. All of my machines are in great shape, and I expect to own them for a good long time.
And Connie, I'm hoping I don't have a mother board blow out like you did, but am pleased that your disaster turned into a new machine buying experience. (Have to admit that when it comes to sewing, I'm a 'very old dog' and would hate to have to learn a new machine). --Lily------ Lily |

Date: 3/28/09 5:34 PM Connie, I do know what you mean. I want a new car, because this one is dirty. ------ “Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig.” -Robert Heinlein and Ann's father. Thanks for the reminder, Ann.

Date: 3/28/09 7:05 PM Yep, I can get replacement bulbs for my Elna serger at Lowe's. I think women get suckered into paying too much for such things because we obediently go to our SM dealer. |

Date: 3/28/09 7:10 PM I bet the Platinums, and Scandinavias, and more take this as well. THANKS KARLA!! WOW! I just jotted that down and put the post-it into my Viking Accessory book! ------ "Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible."

Date: 3/28/09 7:49 PM Thanks Karla for this info. I recently did have to replace the bulb in my Viking Interlude 445 and I did go to the dealer to buy the bulb. The bulb for your machine and mine might be the same exact bulb and I thought it was really a special bulb because it had to fit in that little bulb inserter thingy that you need to remove the old bulb and insert the new one. Now we know.
Now, I wonder if that special bright kryptonite light bulb in my Kenmore can be found in other stores too. -- Edited on 3/28/09 7:57 PM -- |

Date: 3/28/09 9:12 PM I'm not sure what bulbs those models use. I heard the salesclerk at the first Joann's ask the manager about "the lightbulbs for the Lily and the D1", but those were the only machines mentioned. ------ “Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig.” -Robert Heinlein and Ann's father.
