I just bought a Bernina Record 830 from a seller on eBay. She was the original owner and took good care of it, but I'm sad to say my elation dimmed a bit upon setting it up tonight when I discovered that the foot pedal seems to be having problems. I had read about this issue before I bought the machine, but she said she had never had any problems with it although she hadn't sewn on it for a couple of years.

The foot pedal is a 213 with the two prongs and there is a 232 on sale on ebay where the capacitor has already been replaced. The 232s have three prongs for the cord, but the one for sale comes with the cord as well.

Are these foot pedals interchangeable as long as the cord comes with it, or are the prongs where the cord attaches to the machine itself different? I ask because the current price on eBay for the 232 is 10.00 although I am sure it will go higher. Replacement parts without the cord from what I can see online are about 135.00. I hate to spend up to 135.00 if I don't have to.
TIA.

Does your 830 have a switch on the lower right front of the machine? If so, that is where your machine's speed is controlled. The later version 830, which says "Record Electronic" on the front, has it's speed control in the pedal, with an adjustment for the speed range on the bottom.
You can find out more at these two great Yahoo groups:

There is another type of replacement pedal regularly listed on eBay that says works in place of either the 213 or 232, with a Buy It Now of $64.99.

my home 830 record electronic has a 232 foot pedal.

My lakehouse 830 has a switch on the front of the machine & was purchased off of ebay. I believe I need a 213 foot pedal. It came with a phaff foot pedal.

The new 830's came with the 232 foot pedal, which has the speed control adjustment on the bottom. This change eliminated the need for the switch on the front of the machine.

I just found an eBay seller who has a foot pedal that will work for both versions of the 830 for $59.95 and free shipping. Maybe that will work for you?:

THANK YOU, Karen.

I have an 830 Record Electronic with an orginal foot pedal that has had the capacitor replaced. But I think the primitive circuit board has gone wonky -- the machine sews fast and faster even with the speed control screw turned all the way to slow. I've avoided using this great machine because of this issue.

I'm checking out that eBay listing...

I bought one of these eBay pedals (the seller offers a 7-day money-back guarantee). It arrived today.

I only had a few minutes to check it out, but can't believe how great my 830 Record Electronic sews now. Purr, and really good control over speed, fast to slow.

Because it sewed only fast and faster with the original 232 pedal, I never bonded with this machine -- a CL score in a custom cabinet with all original accessories for $100. I was going to sell it. I think I may be in love now.

I have to go on a five-day biz trip tomorrow morning and really wanted to test drive it more, but I've got to finish packing!

HOORAY! So glad it worked out for you! Some days I regret selling my $25 bargain 830. They really are nice machines.
