Date: 5/29/09 3:23 PM When coverstitching a neckline by the shoulders that calls to just turn down 5/8", how do you keep the material from wrinkling or bunching? Do you do some clipping? |

Date: 5/29/09 4:20 PM Why not try making a few samples and see how it behaves? It's going to depend a lot on the fabric you're using and how tight of a curve you're working with. ------ Now blogging at http://sewwest.blogspot.com |

Date: 5/29/09 8:36 PM I trim the sas to 3/8" because it's easier to turn under a smaller width on a curve. I like the cs closer to the edge than 5/8. ------ www.nancyksews.blogspot.com |

Date: 5/29/09 9:18 PM When I first got my CS machine I did quite a few knit tops by just turning under the neckline and coverstitching. For me, I've never been entirely happy with the result so I studied a lot of RTW and usually now I just make a band to get the more finished look I'm after. I have to admit though that turning it under is much more simple. I think trimming as suggested by Nancy is a good way to go.
I do recall that on a few of those tops I did overlock on some clear elastic first to keep the neckline stable.
ETA - as Nanflan said though a lot does depend on the fabric. -- Edited on 5/29/09 9:19 PM -- ------ Maree - Sydney, Australia |

Date: 5/29/09 9:40 PM I don't like turned under neck edges either. They look so cheap IMHO. I either bind them or use a decorative edge elastic. On the last t-shirt I made, I used a piped edge elastic and my coverstitch machine.

Date: 5/29/09 11:14 PM Not all turned under edges look cheap (in my opinion). And sometimes, depending on the pattern/style, there's really not another good option.

Nancy is correct - trim the edge so it turns under easier. You may also want to increase your differential to keep the edge from stretching out, and/or serge clear elastic to the edge before turning under.

That looks lovely! Can you show us the inside edge? You made this piped edge elastic? Please explain how you made it. I would have never thought to pipe elastic. ------ Big 4 Pattern size 12, RTW bottom: 6, RTW jacket 8, RTW top (no size fits me well!)
Measurements: 34 HB/36 FB (34C bra)/27.5/36 (and working hard to keep it that way.)

Date: 5/30/09 8:28 AM Ryan's mom, I also want to know. I have never used clear elastic on anything. This CS stuff is all new to me.
I'm sewing View C knit top and turning under and CS around the neckline and sleeves. Would you suggest a better way of doing this? I did notice that it seemed like the neck was stretching out and gapping open. The top is low cut enough without having the girls spill out!
Also, I noticed where it was said that the clear elastic helped stabilize the neckline. Should I have used that? If so, how do you do that? -- Edited on 5/30/09 8:30 AM -- |

Date: 5/30/09 11:35 AM I've been reading all the posts about clear elastic. If I'm reading this correctly, it sounds like you serge it to the wrong side of the fabric, turn under and topstitch. Instead of topstitching, could I use my coverstitch? |
