Date: 6/19/09 11:16 PM So, a while ago I was reading an issue of Threads, and I fell in love with the fabric in this dress:

However, it was of course made by a professional, and I have no idea where to find Fortuny-pleated fabric. I found a shirt at Goodwill that is a shiny polyester junky thing with similar pleats, and I'm making it into a skirt, but I would really love to actually have some decent Fortuny-pleated fabric! Can anyone help? ------ And as you sew, so shall you rip. |

Date: 6/19/09 11:23 PM It might be easier to have a silk of your choice professionally - more or less permanently - pleated than to find the Fortuny original. We did this for a dressmaker client's client last year. We sent the pleater a piece of chiffon that was her perfect color and it came back with 1" bias pleats.... and the gown... well, it was beyond fabulous. -- Edited on 6/19/09 11:25 PM -- ------ Susanne

Date: 6/19/09 11:35 PM I usually visit Michigan in the summer and also stop in at Haberman's fabric store. From time to time I have seen pleated fabric as pictured in that store. If I were you I would call or stop in and show them your picture. I bet that they would be able to help you or point you in the right direction.

Date: 6/19/09 11:53 PM Unfortunately, I can't afford to send it in professionally. I would totally do that if I could, though!
Where is Haberman's? I haven't heard of it. ------ And as you sew, so shall you rip. |

Date: 6/20/09 1:29 AM Here's link to fake Fortuny pleating, with a bunch of other links at the bottom of the page.
As far as I know, the actual Fortuny process remains unknown. The discussion on this page indicates that Fortuny used pure silk and that the pleats were permanent and did not require re-setting. |

Date: 6/20/09 8:06 AM Threads did an article several years ago on a DIY method, I think I involved pleating the fabric by hand and then wrapping it fabric around a wide carboard tube to set the pleats.
I found some info on their web site, it was issue #97 pages 48-53

The staff knows fabrics and the owner is usually there. It is definitely worth a visit.
