Date: 6/30/09 10:31 PM I added a gathered insert below the button closure of my daughter's wedding dress, and I am starting to cut the lining for the dress. Do I need to also line the gathered piece, or just make the lining with a straight hem across the back? There are pictures of it on this blogspot:

Reply to MarthaA24 Date: 7/1/09 11:59 AM Can you try again? I took out the weird characters in the URL.
I read your profile, and I thought I was reading about myself! I also started sewing about 40 yrs ago, in 8th grade. I've never taken any classes, but my best friend's dad was a tailor and he taught me a lot. I am currently working on my daughter's (dd?) wedding dress for June, 2010. I hope you can see my pictures and comment. I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks

Reply to MarianS Date: 7/2/09 3:33 AM Your lining doesn't need to be as full as the dress. I would not line the gathered piece. But then it helps to know how you plan for the skirt to look and how you are doing things.
Is the dress going to have a petticoat or is the dress to be drapey as it is in the picture? If it will have a petticoat, you should be working with it as you do fittings as it makes a difference.
If there is to be no petticoat, too much lining will only get in the way. The same is true with a dress that has the petticoat between the dress and the lining, as the dress I'm working on for my DD. I narrowed the lining down so it was still easy to walk but wouldn't be bunchy. The lining doesn't need to be as long as the dress either, some of the books suggest ankle length.
If you were to have a bought petticoat going under the lining, then you would need to make sure the lining was big enough for the petticoat.
You are getting a great head start for the wedding in June 2010 and the dress is looking beautiful.
I'm currently working on my DD wedding dress for July 18 about 2 1/2 weeks away. Right now I'm making a bunch of buttons. Hopefully in about a week I will be done. If you want to see a few pictures here is the link to my album.

Date: 7/2/09 7:50 AM I would line the inset, just not as another "gathered" inset. A flat base at the torso flaring out to the hemline with enough volume to allow walking/dancing .
Some of the reasons to do this are:
1)Protecting the fabric from picks and pulls from sharp objects on the floor causing runs, picks etc.
2)Creating an exact color match to the already lined dress
3)gives you a base with which to creat a lovely bustle for the reception
hope this helps, JF Next page>> |

Reply to JEF Date: 7/2/09 8:56 AM When you are in the box to write a message, there are little buttons above the box (B I U http:// ....). If you click on the http:// one, you get another box. Into that box, paste the webaddress you want to be your link (make sure you overwrite the existing http in the box or the link won't work). Your next box is there to put a title on your link (I used "link to dress") which will then show up as a hyperlink.
Check out this thread and you can test the linking out: Practice your links

Reply to MarthaA24 Date: 7/2/09 11:37 AM I am totally amazed at your dress! It is drop-dead gorgeous!
Thanks so much for your great advice. I went ahead and made the narrower lining per the pattern, and I am going to addd the gathered netting to lining, between it and the dress, also per the pattern.
How do you have the time to be answering my questions with the wedding 2 1/2 weeks away? I hope the wedding is a dream come true for your daughter. She has a wonderful mom, for sure.
Are you covering your buttons? I tried, but the charmeuse was way to slippery, and I couldn't catch it under the prongs. I have made them before, but only with thicker fabrics. We purchased the buttons and some button loop tape made with a soutache cord. It turned out very nice, and was a lot easier, but I think I would have liked the covered ones better. They are worth the work if you can do it.
Best of luck!

Reply to greco Date: 7/2/09 11:39 AM Thanks for the advice. The fabric is underlined, so I think it will be alright with the lining just going to about 1 1/2 above the floor. ------ cms Next page>> |
