Date: 7/2/09 12:34 PM I have been looking at the Janome coverpro to help make skating dresses for my daughters. I am so greatful to read the buying guides about this machine.
Has anyone bought one for skating dresses? I primarily use spandex or stretch velvet for their dresses. I really want one to help with the necklines. Any advice would be appreciated! |

Date: 7/2/09 3:04 PM I design and sew skatewear (and other athletic apparel) for a living. I purchased the Janome CP900 a year ago and use it alot. I use it for hems, appliquing, decorative top-stitching, belt loops, strapping, re-inforcing zippers, and much, much more.
I'm still learning lots of new things to do with the CP machine. I purchased the clear foot and find it helps alot for sewing in the round. I still want to get binders for the machine but just haven't had time to look around yet for them.
I definitely like the professional look it gives.

Reply to Squirmy Worm Date: 7/2/09 3:38 PM So far all I have used my CoverPro 1000 for is for gymnastics suits. So spandex and stretch velvet. It made things go very fast and I got a nice result.
Here you can see the finish on the neck, sleeves and a false seam across the chest are all made with my coverpro.

Date: 7/2/09 7:46 PM I don't have a coverpro (I have a Babylock Coverstitch) but have been using it for skating dresses, swimsuits, and leotards. I've posted reviews but I'm not sure if any have photos that will really show the coverstitching. I like the look. I have also (finally!) figured out the exact spot to line my edge up on so that the looper threads cover the raw edge of the fabric/elastic when I use 3/8 inch elastic. Now, it looks good on the inside and outside!

Date: 7/2/09 10:13 PM If you plan to use wooly nylon in your skating dresses, be aware- Janome doesn't like it.
Now I own Brother 2340V, and it performs like a pro -no complaints! I use it whatever I like, whenever I like, restricted only by my imagination. |

Reply to creative1 Date: 7/3/09 0:43 AM I have only used Polyarn (by Superior Threads) a wooly nylon impostor in my looper, never regular thread. Supposedly it is better that wooly nylon, not sure why? But I had no trouble whatsoever. Interesting.

Date: 7/3/09 1:13 AM I've used wooly nylyon in my loopers and have not had any problems in either my CP or my serger. I also use a lot of metallic and variegated threads in my serger and CP and have no problems with them either. So far, so good .... knock on wood.
My Janome has done everything I've asked it too and so much more -- from the finest chiffon and silk to heavy pleather with multiple seams.

Reply to Squirmy Worm Date: 7/3/09 12:14 PM Squirmy, I'm glad you found the Coverpro guide useful. I don't sew skating outfits, but I do sew a lot of poly/lycra jerseys with my Coverpro. Here's one review. ------ The essence of life is statistical improbability on a colossal scale.

Date: 7/4/09 12:18 PM Thanks everyone for your replies. I am definetly going to get a coverstitch machine! I am trying to justify the cost to my husband - but with expensive skating dresses, I am sure that this is going to pay off in the end! |
