Subject: Embelishment Contest Date: 7/27/09 10:14 PM

Hello Everyone! I hope you are all feeling creative in spite of the heat - or the cold if you happen to be one of our friends from 'Down Under.' Because for the first time we bring you the Embellishment Contest!

As questions come in I may be adding some FAQs to this first post. The contest starts August 1 (as an aside, I love it when a contest starts on a Saturday!) and as usual you may fit your pattern and prep your fabric prior to then.

AnneM suggested that this would be an excellent time to tweak a TNT pattern, and I thought that would be a great idea. Also, AnneM suggested to think of the embellishment as something incorporated into the garment rather than as a tacked on afterthought. That's another great suggestion IMHO, to begin with the end in mind.

And before we get started I want to let everyone know that I will be answering questions in the evenings, EDT. My employer thinks sewing websites are evil and blocks my access, so I can't even take a peek on my lunch hour. So please be patient if you don't hear something until late evening.

Here are the rules and do please read these through carefully since this is all new:

Contest Rules
Embellishment definition: non-structural decorations adding to the look of the item. Examples: Ribbons, crystals, beading, appliques, paint, embroidery. The list goes on.

Note: Dying fabric is NOT considered an embellishment for purposes of this contest. This is changing the fabric not embellishing the garment. Painting or stencilling designs is considered an embillishment.

1. Garments or accessories are eligible for this contest. Item must be sewn by the entrant.

2. More than one entry is allowed for each contestant. Each item is considered separately (in other words, you are competing against yourself).

3. Garments or accessories are eligible for this contest. Item must be sewn by the entrant. The garment does NOT need to be constructed within the contest dates, but any embellishment work must be done in the month of August to qualify for this contest.

4. A 'before' picture must be included, as well as at least one 'after' picture. The before picture can either be of the plain fabric, if the embillishments are applied before sewing, or of the plain garment.

5. Winners are determined by voting.

Voting
Criteria to consider when voting:

1) Does the item look professional (for the entrant's stated skill level)?

2) Did the review explain the technique?

3) Did the embellishment enhance or change the appearance of the garment?

4) You can also consider originality, difficulty level.

General Contest Rules
*Rules that apply to all contests:

1. Contests begin on the 1st of the month, and all reviews must be entered for submission by midnight Eastern Time on the last day of the month.

2. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, Patterns may be drafted, tweaked, and muslined before the contest date, but fabric for the pieces entered may not be laid out or cut till the start date of the contest. Fabric may be pretreated before the contest date.

3. Items intended for sale, or for which you were or will be paid to make, do not qualify for any contest, but items made for charity are welcome!

4. Unless otherwise stated in the rules, all reviews written for a contest entry must include a picture of the entry. (NOTE: the Embellishment contest requires two photos, a before and after.)

Contest Eligibility

1. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the start of a contest is eligible to enter.

2. Any member of Pattern Review, either paying (FoPR) or non-paying, who's been a registered member on the site for 90 days prior to the end of a contest is eligible to vote in a contest.

3. Any member who's won a prize (1st or 2nd place) in a contest on Pattern Review ended in the previous six months is ineligible to win another contest for a period of 6 months.

7/28/2009 edited to add new rule to contest, see #3 under Contest Rules

I am so embarrassed. I spelled Embellishment wrong in my topic header.

LOL! Yeah, it's kinda the first thing I noticed. I'm sure a kindly mod can fix it for you.

I'm not too sure I want to bring it to their attention! Can't you see the headlines about the Congressional hearings on this? "Woman who can't spell 'embelllishment' selected to head embellishment contest! Where were the authorities!!!"

Well, you are doing as well as me. I just sent a PM to pyrose asking her to make the topic sticky and fix your typo. I wrote 'embillishment'. And in your note just now, Rhonda, you put 3 L's instead of 2! Trying to make up for lost ground, I guess.

I'm sure the actual embellishments will do better than our spelling.

I just KNEW I'd eventually use that GemMagic someone gave me for Christmas a few years ago!

I think I'm challenging myself to see how many contests I can enter in 6 months.

I'm with you Pinky, I'm also joining, as well as the pattern stash. I really just need to make a dent in my fabric stash... there's just so much more fabric out there that looks interesting

I can understand that dyeing fabric a solid color or mottled color isn't an embellishment but what about techniques that are more than 'put fabric and dye together'. Since painting and stenciling is okay, does the no dyeing mean I can't free hand paint, stencil or silk screen designs with thickened dyes? Without touching the fabric or reading a description it can be difficult or impossible to tell if dye or paint was used. I generally use dyes instead of paints because most fabric paints change the hand of the fabric and most fabric paints require heat setting with an iron.

Thanks,

Joanne
