Date: 8/21/09 10:47 PM I was at my local Jo-Ann Superstore today since there is a buy-one-get-one-free sale on thread this weekend. I was going to stock up on some serger thread & noticed that they now carry Toldi-Lock, which is overlock thread by Gutermann.
Anyone have experience with this overlock thread? It's Gutermann, so I would think it would be good. |

Date: 8/22/09 12:09 PM I recently bought 4 spools of one color, because that's all that was available at my local Jo-Ann's Superstore as well - and I needed to finish a top. All of my other serger threads are Maxi-Lock. I use regular Gutermann thread for all general sewing and it is great, so I thought this new serger thread from Gutermann would be just as good for its purpose.
Both are 100% polyester, but I noticed several differences immediately: First, Toldi-Lock is finer and lighter weight - probably making it good for finishing edges but perhaps not as strong for the seam itself. Second, Toldi-Lock provides 2,500m of thread on a cone while Maxi-Lock provides 3,000yds. You'd need to compare the prices available to you to see if that matters. Third, Toldi-Lock does not specifiy country of manufacture inside the cone while Maxi-Lock does. I like to know where things are made. Fourth, Toldi-Lock does not provide the manufacture date inside the cone so that you can keep track of how old the thread is while Maxi-Lock specifies month and year of manufacture. Finally, Toldi-Lock does not specify color or dye lot inside the cone while Maxi-Lock does and different dye lots occasionally look quite different. That only matters in some applications, though.
All of that said, however, it might be just fine for most purposes and I would buy it if I really needed something and didn't want to wait. But I think I'm going to stick with Maxi-Lock. It is available several places online at a very reasonable price.

Date: 8/24/09 2:28 PM I just bought some for my "new-to-me" blindhemming machine. It seems more consistent in weight than maxi-lock & joann generic. Maybe I'm just brainwashed towards Gutermann. Okay, I am. ------ Pfaff 138-6

Date: 5/18/10 12:23 PM I'm reviving this thread to see if anyone else has tried this thread and has any opinions on it.
So has anyone else tried Gutermann Toldi-Lock? What do you think? Gutermann Thread is going to be 40% off at Joann's starting May 23. ------ "framed" was taken |

I bought several colors in January of the Told-Lock. The other serger thread I have is Maxilock. While it is 'slightly' thinner that Maxilock, I have seen no problems with using it. It stays threaded in the tensions and I have had no breaks. Usually I buy online and get the Maxilock, but needed some colors quickly so I bought this.
I still prefer Maxilock, but will not hesitate to buy this if I absolutely need to.

Date: 5/18/10 5:14 PM Thanks for the information. Good to know that it isn't totally crummy thread.
I like having easy access to the Toldi-lock, but I guess it is more expensive than purchasing Maxilock from ATs online. ------ "framed" was taken |

Date: 5/24/10 7:28 PM The Todi-Lock I've bought at Joann's was manufactured in Thailand. It has worked fine for me, though I prefer Maxi-Lock because of the larger spools. ------ Susie

Date: 5/25/10 8:29 AM The Toldi-Lock doesn't quite fit on my Janome serger quite right. THat being said, I've never had problems with it once it's all threaded up. I've never tried Maxi-Lock, but I'm curious now... ------ emadethis.wordpress.com
