I want to make these....

This personalized and custom-made photo memory quilt wall hanging allows you to add up to 9 photos on your wall hanging, creating a picture gallery to commemorate your special person or event. This quilt measures 26" x 26" (66cm x 66cm), and includes nine 6" (15cm) square blocks. You can choose to fill all the blocks with photos, or alternate your photos with another quilting pattern - see below for possible patterns. Each block is bordered with a fabric in your color choice, called sashing, and the entire quilt is then bordered with a 2” (5cm) border. Each quilt has tabs decoratively added to the quilt for easy hanging, finished with themed buttons. Photos are sized and trimmed to completely fit the 6" square. If you would like your photo to be the original size, with white showing around the photo, please indicate this in the Special Requests Box.

I hesitate to put the website that would have the picture because I don't want to put up a site that is advertising.

So basically what this is, is a quilted wallhanging. 3 rows of 3 blocks each, the outside corners and middle block are a 16 patch. Then the other 4 blocks or photos printed on fabric. These are 6 in sq. blocks for all of these. Then there is sashing on all 4 sides of these blocks. Then there is a 2 inch border. It is a 26 x 26 inch sq. quilt.

I asked the other day and I know how to do the 16 patch blocks now but I guess I need to know, 1. how wide I need to cut my sashing strips. And secondly how is the best way to construct this little wallhanging.

I have quilted but have always had explicit instructions the order to do things in. I have been away from this on a regular basis long enough to have forgotten some things and due to moving and in the process of redoing a house my quilting books are packed up yet.

So I could really use some help. I am making about 3 or 4 of these for Christmas gifts and have to get going on them.

Thank-you,
Jolene

Does this make sense.... 26x26 picture. 3 rows of 6 inch blocks, so that is 18 inches. Then there is a 2 inch border on each side, so we are up to 22 inches. So does that make each sashing row 1 inch and then I cut those strips 1 1/2 incehs allowing for the 1/4 inch seam allowance?

You're close. OK, it's 22" with the blocks and outside border. That leaves 2 sashes (between 3 blocks), 2" each (finished). So cut your sashes and border strips 2.5" wide.

For the sashing, you'll need 6 pieces that are 2.5" x 6.5" and 2 pieces that are 2.5" x 22.5". For the border, you'll need 2 more pieces that are 2.5" x 22.5" and 2 that are 2.5" x 26.5". Actually, this will make a quilt that's 26.5" square; you could cut the border strips narrower than the sashing, but it really looks better to have them all the same width. Also, your binding will cover up the extra 1/4" on the outside edge.

To assemble, sew the 3 rows this way - block, short sashing piece, block, short sash piece, block. Then sew the rows together this way - short border strip, row of blocks, long sash strip, row of blocks, long sash strip, row of blocs, short border strip. (If you make the sashing and border the same fabric then the short border strips and the long sashing strips are exactly the same.) Last, sew the long border strips onto the outer edges. That's it!

Irene I just sent you a link to the project I want to make. I am confused because the sashing looks narrower than the outside border. So check you PM box and see if it is how you described to do it.

I really appreciate your help and input on this.

Ok, I reread your message again and you are saying that the sashing and border will look better if they are the same size rather than the sashing being smaller like I think it is in the picture I sent you.

Here's the picture of the quilt.

My apologies - I didn't think they had sashing around the outside of the blocks! So in this case, the sashing is 1" wide finished, so you would cut strips 1.5" wide. Sorry!

Since the border is twice as wide as the sashing, it looks fine. In fact, I like it better than having the border the same width as the sashing. But it's your quilt, so feel free to change anything you want!

Thank-you Irene. I appreciate you takiing your time on this. Right now I am just collecting my fabric for each of them that I am making but I want to just be able to go when I am ready to do this.
