Date: 10/7/09 12:11 PM I just ran across these pictures while doing some searching for something else. I don't think I've ever seen a wedding dress with so much beautiful hand embroidery on it. To think about starting on something of this magnitude just leaves me feeling so totally inadequate! How did they put so many hours into something like this - and so beautifully and well done?Hand Embroidered 1914 Wedding Dress -- Edited on 10/7/09 12:12 PM -- ------ Sewing in Wild, Wonderful West Virginia

Date: 10/8/09 7:53 PM I think they put in the hours, because that's what they had - hours. They didn't have TV, computers, etc. to distract them. A completely different way of life then. Reply to Ann D Chafin Date: 10/11/09 5:12 PM Absolutely, stunningly, jaw-droppingly (I actually just typed draw-joppingly :D) gorgeous!
But, since the OP asked about the hours it would take... it's primarily satin stitch in what looks like a perle-coton-weight thread, which is pretty swift going, in terms of hand stitches. I do lots of hand needlework, including a huge wedding sampler for my brother that was almost entirely satin stitch--and it was definitely a lot quicker a stitch than, say, something of a comparable size in (for example) cross stitches. You cover a surprising amount of ground with each stitch.
Now... the thing that amazes me is how they did all that stunning work with the quality of artificial light available at the time! ------ ~Gem in the prairie |
