I'm sewing liberty cotton for the first time and I wondered if anyone had any tips? I had read on the net that I should use a cotton thread, and to try to get an embroidery thread because it would be finer than normal thread. When I explained to the girl at the fabric shop what I was after, she looked at me like she thought I mighht be a bit of a loony bird and said I'd be fine with Guterman polyester thread and about a size 70 needle.

What do you all think?

I would use long staple mercerized cotton thread on a Liberty cotton, either 50/3 or 60/2 weight and a 70 or 75 needle depending on the feel of the cotton.

Personally, I think the gal at the fabric shop is the loony bird for suggesting polyester with a fine cotton.

You can buy 'extra fine' thread, not sure if it's all cotton though.

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.

Thanks ladies. I went to the quilting store where they sell a bunch of Liberty prints so I figured they could sell me something that would be good for sewing it with. They gave me Gutermann all-cotton thread, which is finer than the polyester. Linda, where do you find thread that is in sizes? I'm in Australia, I have never seen it sold with a size indicated.
