Date: 4/10/10 12:15 PM I would love to know how to grade DOWN from say 44 or 46 to 36/38, quite a few sizes. There are some cute Burda/La Mia boutique/Patrones patterns in Plus sizes but grading down so many sizes completely changes shoulders/armseyes Not sure pivot-slide will work. maybe this book has tips? ------ .....Behold, a wonder did appear;
Amazement was my bliss....... Next page>> |

Reply to HawkeMorningStar7 Date: 4/13/10 9:12 PM I don't believe pivot/slide will solve the problem you're talking about grading down from a plus size to your size. The pivot/slide I'd say is more a fitting technique. You avoid pattern disaster by maintaining the seam lengths of the pattern pieces, but manipulating the tissue to allow for added girth or length. The same adjustments by slicing the "shorten/lengthen" lines or with a multi-sized pattern cutting say a 46" bust but a 44" waist by blending side seam lines.
In fact I'd bed money on it. Plus size patterns are larger in their specific regions to accommodate the plus size figure (usually bust and hips). But I bet you could do a proper grading down from a plus size to your size with very few problems.
I do not have the book that this thread is mentioning, however I do have a grading book I used in school. It's very "quick and dirty" because it's not elaborate illustrations and explanations. it's more "You want to grade down? do this."
In your case it'd be very easy because you're just going down one size. Often times I think people wreck their brains trying to make something fit, when in the end they would've been better to grade a true size up or down. ------ ~Dzynurbrian~

Date: 4/14/10 10:38 AM The issue with plus sizes, is that to do them properly, it should be an entirely different pattern and body from the regular sizing. This is why good RTW manufacturers don't grade up to plus sizes based on the regular sizes because this would amount to "morphing". Grading only makes an existing shape larger or smaller.
