My suspicions confirmed. Unfortunately.

Sewing Consumer Alert

This video was uploaded by the same person(s) who uploaded the "Janome Trim & Sew" sewing machine. It was uploaded five days ago.

Is "Consumer Watch" with Cathy Marshall a legit show? Never heard of it before.

Very interesting..I wonder if Consumer Watch is a division of Janome?

I tried wiggling my WalMart Brother as they did in the video and it seems pretty sturdy to me...

She's legit.

I googled her name and cross checked it with a photo. Not sure about the Consumer Watch program.

The most used sewing machine repairman here in the Greater Vancouver Area also recommended a Janome to me as a brand that he infrequently repairs so there is merit to the claim.

However it did seem a little contrived.

Anyone recognize the casing of the machine without a metal frame inside? I have my suspicions...

I can vouch for Janome and Janome-made Elna machines. They are among the most trouble-free, reliable modern machines that I have sewn on. I also think that Bernina makes good machines and has excellent consumer support — even if they are overpriced.

But still, my vintage Singer cost me $60, and it still runs beautifully (made in 1951), and produces the best straight stitch of any machine I've ever owned. Kinda cements the argument, for me anyway, to use an older, all-metal workhorse. Short of that, I think it pays to buy from a dealer, and stay away from Walmart and online sources.

Enlightening video. That said, it sends a clear message that if someone is serious about sewing then it is worth the extra money to invest in a quality machine from a reputable dealer or to at least stay away from big box stores. Of course, it sounds like this woman just ran out and bought a machine without giving it much thought other than she figured if she spent a couple hundred dollars she'd get a good machine. Another vote for Janome. I'm not knocking other brands as I own different brands and am happy with all of them. Vintage machines, if in good repair, are also not a bad idea.

It kind of bugs me, and maybe this is a legitimate concern (or not), but if a manufacturer has cheap machines at Walmart and Target, etc, what about their higher-end products? I'm already leery about Singer products, but Brother? I was getting close to buying a Brother 1034D serger, but now I'm having doubts. Also, I noticed that the "Project Runway" machines have good reviews here on PR — weird after what we just saw.

I think you meant to type "Brother 1034D serger."
