Date: 10/29/09 0:39 AM Anyone who has or know someone who has a little one in thrall to Thomas and his train yard cohorts knows that the sheer volume of merchandise with their likenesses beggars belief..toys, books, CDs, socks, undies, PJ's...Except for button down shirts for little boys with a nice little Thomas applique (a la the LaCoste 'gator), or barring that, a source for iron on or sew on appliques that I can attach to a plain old button down shirt. My nephew is mildly autistic and, for any of you who know how they can have a little bit of a "thing" when it comes to clothing, my nephew's "thing" is button down shirts. No T-shirt or polo shirt will do. It's a button down, or else! Or else he doesn't get dressed. And you know how they frown on nudity on the school bus! But back to the G rated part of this discussion... His other "thing" is most definitely Thomas and his friends. My nephew's birthday is coming up and I'd love to get some double favorite Aunt points by scoring a button down shirt with Thomas on it. If you don't understand this, you don't understand the power of Thomas. But I'd still be so grateful to anyone who can point me to a source. BTW, my nephew's birthday is Nov. 15. So, no pressure

Date: 10/29/09 8:57 AM Try ebay.
Search for "Thomas train applique" and as of this morning, I came up with thirteen different applique set auctions, and twenty-five store offerings. |

Date: 10/29/09 5:17 PM My DD adored Thomas, but they don't make Thomas clothing for girls. I bought a yard of Thomas-themed cotton and appliqued pieces to a shirt, and you could also print a Thomas image onto photo transfer paper and iron it on... |

Date: 10/29/09 6:07 PM do you have an embroidery machine, or know a nice person who does? there are several cheap embroidery designs, here's one and another, if you can embroider thse out it would be easy to turn them into an applique
and here is one more (a set, actually) Thomas the tank designs
of course you could perhaps just embroider them on a shirt, as well -- Edited on 10/29/09 6:15 PM -- ------ Viking Lily 545
Viking Ruby
Bernina Activa 210

Date: 10/30/09 0:20 AM The image transfer is an inspired idea! I'm really more of an image transferer than an embroiderer There is someone in my neighborhood who does embroidery as a business, but she won't do quantities of less than a dozen. I'm sure in here in NYC where rents are so high, she doesn't have a lot of wiggle room in the bottom line. But thanks to all for the great suggestions ! |

I made my own appliques as well from scraps of yardage. It is extremely easy to do if you can't find the other kind.
Here is a shirt I did that way:

Date: 10/31/09 6:47 PM Tanya, that shirt is adorable, but I really think it's the model who makes the picture! Nice job. And a great idea. Thank you! |

Date: 10/31/09 11:45 PM Tanya that is a really cute shirt!! I wish I had a picture of mine, it was so long ago... I basically used a square from the print, tacked it down with Steam a Seam, and then zigzagged around the edges. |
