Date: 10/29/09 11:37 AM A group of us has been having such a good time in the Make A Skirt Muslin class taught by Shannon Gifford, that we want to keep going and put those muslins to good use! So, c'mon sewers, let's sew some skirts that fit!
You're welcome to join in if you want to sew a skirt, whether you have a muslin or not. [Edit 12/4/2009: The members of this sew-along have decided they'd like to keep on stitching skirts together into January 2010 and beyond. So please feel free to join in the fun and sew something wonderful!]
To join us, please post about your projects at least every other week so we can draw inspiration from everyone's work in progress, help each other as we go and, most importantly, not get stuck on a fitting problem. Don't be shy: post photos of your inspiration, your muslin, your fabrics, your creations and your tricky problems. And don't forget to give us the link if you write a PR review for your skirt pattern. Compiling a list of fabulous skirts will be a great way for us to give back to the PR community.
Here's the first skirt I'm going to sew Burda 8973. I'll be tweaking the muslin to put a contoured yoke at the waistline. Not sure what fabric I'll use yet... something that will allow a little motion at the hem but still have some heft for the cool season. (Any suggestions from you Fall fabric fashionistas?)
Where are you going to start?
Hope you'll join us!
Jenny

Subject: Skirt Sew Along - Thank you! Date: 10/29/09 9:32 PM Hi Jenny, great idea for a sew along, thank you for putting it together. And I love your pattern, two very different looks from one pattern, and the long skirt would look very different depending on what FF you choose, whether and
how you line it, etc etc. I'm looking forward to seeing your skirts!
I'm not sure which pattern I'll use, it is rather an embarrassment of riches in my pattern stash. Right now I'm trying to finish up my too tight muslin. I have been riding more and it is quite obvious from a side shot of my fits-like-a-glove Vogue 1004 sloper. What to do? I've posted pics and questions on the class board, hope to resolve and move on to a FUN skirt.
Regards,

Date: 10/29/09 10:39 PM Hi Jenny and Elle - I'm looking forward to finishing up my muslin and getting going on some new fall and winter skirts. Hopefully, this sew-along will inspire me and gives me some motivation to use what I'm learning in the skirt muslin class.

Date: 10/30/09 7:24 AM Honestly, I haven't decided yet whether I want to go ahead and make a skirt straight from my master pattern from the fitting class (based off of McCall's 3830) or go with fitting the second muslin that I was originally going to do, which is #117 in the March 2007 Burda mag. (I have the perfect final fabric for it, but haven't even traced the pattern yet, let alone fit it!) I won't get any sewing in this weekend, most likely, so maybe by next week I can make up my mind... Next page>> |

Date: 10/30/09 8:54 AM Once I get my muslin finished (what optimism), I would love to join you.
Jenny, I love your pattern, and Sunny, I love that Burda pattern too.
Elle and Sharon, I'm in your camp, not knowing what I'll sew when I'm finished. I'm leaning toward the HotPatterns pencil skirt, which I wish I'd used instead of the Vogue 1004 sloper, frankly.
Hope to be joining you in here soon.

Date: 10/30/09 10:09 AM I am making a skirt, from a LMB magazine. I will try to take and post pics of the skirt because I don't see it on the webpage. So far, I have cut out the skirt and the trim application. Fun to sew along with y'all! ------ Fabric Purchased in 2011: 37 yards

Reply to jtrautman Date: 10/30/09 10:49 AM Good idea -- I'll sew along if I get a chance. I have a zillion Burda skirt patterns I want to try, as well as one or two from other companies. I've made several Burda skirts (one of them multiple times) and all of them have had the same fit for me, so I won't be making a muslin, but if that's not an issue, I'll give this a try.
That pattern you're making is on my "fabulous skirt list" already (here's my review). So are these (all Burdas):
8344 (my TNT basic skirt, which I've made several times for myself and once for my daughter)
3152 (surprisingly classy fit for an elastic-waist skirt)
OOP 7861 (flattering and classy front-pleated skirt -- no idea why this went OOP so quickly)
8176 (Young Collection circle skirt, which I made for my daughter)
I would post my "skirts I'm most interested in making soon" list, but there are too many and this would take too long, lol. I think I'll just wait and see which one calls to me first (if it can make itself heard over the loud call of Christmas sewing...).

Date: 11/1/09 12:10 PM Eek, I seem to have killed this thread. Sorry.
P.S. If you want to keep this a muslin-focused sew-along, no problem.

Date: 11/1/09 8:11 PM My skirt
I am working on a skirt from LMB 11-2006-32. They didn't go up to size 54 (their pattern sizes vary from Burda) so I am doing the design on anothe skirt pattern. hand-embroidering all of the lines is taking some time. The skirt has been cut out alreadt, maybe I will sew it together tonight. ------ Fabric Purchased in 2011: 37 yards
