Date: 11/4/09 2:32 PM I have some quilted coating fabric in my stash similar in texture/drape to this:
(joann coating fabrics)
The fabric is white w/ white stitching. I'm looking to make a unlined coat from this and would like suggestions. I've been considering things like Vogue 8307 (shortened and unlined) and Vogue 8600
Do you think either of these a good choice, or do you have other suggestions? I have ~4 yds of the fabric. ------ ~~ Sewing -- not brain surgery or rocket science but more fun! ~~ |

Reply to Physics Girl Date: 11/4/09 5:00 PM I believe with a quilted fabric, simple is better as the fabric would be a bit bulky.
A "Chanel" style, maybe like view E of this pattern. ------ "Trying to save the world before bedtime"---PowerPuff Girls |

Date: 11/4/09 5:52 PM I'm going to recommend something fitted. A quilted fabric is going to look bulky, so it's probably not going to be that flattering in a boxy or oversized style... and I'm having trouble picturing it in those elaborate structured collars.
Have you checked out RTW? Eddie Bauer and LL Bean are doing some cute things with quilted jackets/vests, and they tend to be a little more fitted. ------ ~Gem in the prairie |

Your jacket is gorgeous. I'd have never thought of doing that style in a quilted fabric but yours looks terrific. Great job on the zipper, too.
I have some beautiful quilted fabric that isn't as lightweight as yours. It has a very soft, flat pile on one side, diamond-quilted to a polyester lining. I'm now looking at more fitted styles although I'll have to match the diamonds, I'm afraid.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Date: 11/5/09 8:42 AM Hmm... I was thinking something less fitted because my body isn't back to shape yet since my baby was born (she's 3 months)... and this quilted stash just seems comfy. Things with body and bulk appealed to me since there's more to wrap around or "grab at"... and when holding the baby (usually in her snuggli or moby) I sometimes need to jerk at odd pieces of my own clothing sticking out to get things right on me, as well as have extra to hug around her. But perhaps my brain isn't back since the little one arrived either, and I should wait on using this... that's why I thought I'd better ask. ------ ~~ Sewing -- not brain surgery or rocket science but more fun! ~~ |

Reply to Physics Girl Date: 11/5/09 9:52 AM Congratulations on the new baby. I think a simple, basic style like Kwik Sew 3438, View A, which is loose fitting but trim and recommended for quilted fabrics, would work well for you. Having worked with quilted fabrics, I do not think they're appropriate for patterns with complicated style lines like the two you're considering.
Also, if your fabric is white, it may not be the best choice for holding an infant since every stain will show. If you want to sew a quilted fabric, you should head over to Joann's because they have a few dark, quilted polyester fabrics in stock right now.
Incidentally, the quilted fabric I used, tended to go off grain very easily. So I had to interface every inch of the fabric with fusible knit interfacing. French Fuse is a good choice.
