Hi, I am replacing the carpeted floor in my sewing room with a laminate floor. Does anyone know if I will need a chair mat under a chair with wheels? TIA.....Helen

I WOULD HIGHLY recommend a floor mat.. as the continual rolling of the chair castors in one area may wear down the laminate over time. Depending on the thickness of your laminate you might want to cover other areas with throw rugs or such..especially where you first enter a home..

The short answer is "maybe."

I don't have a sewing room, but I do have a lot of laminate in my house, and if it is a lower quality flooring, it can get scratched. The better the quality, the more resistant it will be to damage. Ours is ok but not great - I'm choosing to live like a normal person and whatever happens, happens. :)

Then there is the question of the chair and its wheels - they may roll easily with no problems, OR they might not get enough traction and slide all over the place. If threads and other flotsam get caught in the wheels, it can make the problem worse, or they may collect something that scratches the floor every time you roll. I hate to say it, but you might have to wait and see.

The first people to sheath those %@#$ plastic wheels with a little rubber are going to make a fortune.

The first time you go to sit on your chair and you go rolling across the room, you will realize you need something under the chair. LOL Ask me how I know.

I put a small rug down under my chair. Just large enough to fit under the wheels and keep me in place. It is pretty funny though to try it without.

I love the laminate floor in my sewing room.

We will soon (finally) be putting the laminate in my studio. We have been told to replace all the wheels on chairs and my cutting table extensions (which are all plastic) with rubber wheels -- easier said than done as they are hard to find.

Thanks for the help! I thought I would need something but what threw me was the fact that the chair mats for hardwood floors (as opposed to carpeting) I saw online were laminate, so I was thinking do I put laminate over laminate? I like the small rug idea better. That will stop me from crashing into the wall....so thanks!

I put the higher price laminate through my house a couple years ago and have really enjoyed it. True in the sewing room my chair does roll easily and I like it as I go from one machine to other. It hasn't scratched the floors yet. I just hope it last good. I only do rugs at doors as I really don't like to many throw rugs. They just make extra work for me.

I've had good quality laminate in my studio for 6 years without any rug or protection and the floor still looks great. I have three tables I rearrange according to project and 2 chairs on rollers. I scoot across the room to retrieve whatever I need rather than getting up. The only thing that has given me any problem with the floor is the temporary spray adhesive I use for embroidery. Even though I use a box the overspray is invasive. Once I realized it was happening I started spraying outside. I doubt anyone with carpet or rug would ever notice but it sure shows after a while on laminate. Also had to put mouse pads under my foot pedals to keep them from sliding away from me :>)

It was an excellent choice for the room and I love it!
