Date: 11/5/09 5:44 PM Maybe I am wrong but I think I saw on here one time, several years ago, a thread about making a lining for a jacket that does not call for lining. I have done a search but came up empty handed. Can anyone help me in this search. Or if there is no such thread, can you help me make the pieces to make a lining. TIA,

Reply to NanJones Date: 11/5/09 5:58 PM This is really very simple, but some changes need to be made to your pattern pieces. If you have either Taunton's Guide to Easy Jackets or their book on linings you'll find all the information you need. You might also just google your topic and you will probably find all the information you need. ------ www.nancyksews.blogspot.com |

Reply to NanJones Date: 11/5/09 7:46 PM Here's an article from Threads Magazine that includes directions for drafting your own lining pattern from a regular jacket pattern. But I think the Easy Guide to Sewing Jackets that Nancy K recommends has better instructions. ------ The essence of life is statistical improbability on a colossal scale.

Reply to NanJones Date: 11/6/09 6:27 AM Nancy, I was just looking for instructions on drafting a lining! I found a lovely tutorial with illustrations in Claire Shaeffer's "High Fashion Sewing Secrets". As a bonus, if you click to look inside on Amazon and search for "draft lining" you can view the whole tutorial online for free. I was so grateful that I ordered the book anyway (darn you, Amazon Prime and your Two-Day 1-Click.) ------ proud to be a boutique sewer for Oliver + S

Reply to NanJones Date: 11/6/09 7:44 AM I agree with looking at the resources already mentioned.
Here's my lazy way:
Use your pattern pieces for the jacket back, front and sleeves. Place the center back 3/4" from the lining fabric fold--this will add a pleat for wearing ease. You will stitch the pleat closed for 3-4" from the neckline down and 3-4" form the bottom up, leave the middle open but pressed.
Cut the front piece the same, then lay the front facing pattern piece on top of the lining front and trace the inner edge(the edge opposite the center front) on the lining with chalk. Remove the facing pattern, add 1/2" to your chalk line for a seam allowance and cut on this line.
Cut the sleeves from the sleeve pattern.
Remember that the length of all three pieces should be equal to the finished hem length of the jacket.
I hope this makes sense!
Judy
Also, I think this would be an excellent idea for a PR class -- Lining Jackets. It could include drafting a lining, lining construction, bagging a lining, etc. I'm off to post a suggestion on the online classes section! ------ judyp |

Date: 11/6/09 1:45 PM Last night I googled and found in pictures just what I was looking for. If I can't follow the pictures I will use JudyP's explanation which were quite good. Thanks to NancyK, Nancy 2001 and Norasroom for your replies. |

Date: 11/6/09 6:40 PM I just got done making a lining for a coat based on that Threads article. I eventually got it done, but I must say that the article is very confusing, mainly because the article's layout seems to be messed up. Perhaps the translation from print to web reordered some of the steps. I'm going to keep an eye out for the book mentioned in this thread for future linings (or order it on Amazon).

Reply to norasroom Date: 11/7/09 5:11 PM Nora, you'll love Claire Schaeffer's book. It contains a great deal of helpful and interesting information on many types of sewing topics. ------ The essence of life is statistical improbability on a colossal scale.
