Date: 11/8/09 5:16 AM Hi, I saw a lovely (RTW) t-shirt with a really drapey cowl neckline. It had two small pleats either side of the front neckline. The T-shirt was a really fine jersey which I think made the cowl so gorgeous. It had simple extended shoulders which made a short sleeve. Price tag $70 AU from just an ordinary chain store! Can anyone point me to a good pattern for the cowl. I can sort out the sleeve that's no bother. Thanks in advance! ------ Now that I'm older I no longer need to know everything! Next page>> |

Reply to rag doll Date: 11/8/09 2:43 PM Hi Rag doll.
How about Kwik Sew 3036. View C.
It's one of my all time favorites especially using a very drapey knit--like slinky!
Quick, easy, elegant!
HTH!

Date: 11/12/09 10:14 AM fabric.com site has a free cowl neck pattern under Free Downloadable Patterns. Not sure if that's anything close to what you want, but for free it's worth checking it out. Next page>> |

Date: 11/12/09 10:58 AM My go to is Simplicity 4539 but it is now out of print, I believe. However, the revelation for me in making this pattern, which is for jersey and works best in fine jerseys, is that it is just a scoop neck tee with a rectangular piece of fabric doubled and sewn to the neckline. There is nothing sophisticated about the shape of the cowl--just a rectangle! This opens up the possibility of just adding a cowl to your favorite tee shirt.
For the other kind of cowl (the drapey, cut-on kind) I like Simplicity 9626, unfortunately also out of print! ------ http://theslapdashsewist.blogspot.com

Date: 11/12/09 6:48 PM I just bought a new Kwik Sew cowl neck pattern 3740. If you want a drapier neckline I think there is a Hotpatterns that has lots of gathers.
I liked the controlled cowl on this Kwik Sew...looks like a quickie too...hopefully!
I have a lot of knits to use. -- Edited on 11/12/09 8:51 PM -- Next page>> |

Date: 11/18/09 8:51 AM This is my current favorite pattern Vogue 8597. I've made it three times in less than 2 weeks. I've done version A length with the sleeve length of B. I've done it in a rayon knit, a poly knit and a sweater knit. Can you tell I like it
I'm also seriously considering lengthening the longer version into a dress for a holiday party.
It's super easy and quick especially if you have a serger. The only alterations I made was raising the armcyces a full inch but I have to do that on most patterns. ------ http://kimsewsilly.blogspot.com/ Next page>> |

Reply to Kim12469 Date: 11/18/09 12:07 PM I just made that Vogue top too. It turned out great! I wish I had thought to raise the armscyes too (I have small shoulders and usually need to adjust something in that area), but otherwise, the fit is super right out of the envelope. I'm already planning my second! ------ Amy

Date: 11/18/09 1:16 PM I just bought Vogue 8597 at a recent Joanne's sale. I'm happy to hear it's such a loved pattern. I was simply attracted to the cut and the cowl. I also picked up McCall's 5926 which is a dress with a large cowl neckline and a looser fit. The cowl appears to be back with several possible pattern choices. Next page>> |
