Hello, I have made a the knit mock turtle neck top from the above pattern. I used a jersey knit and turned it into a full turtle neck. It will not fit over the child's head. How do I adjust the pattern to make it wide enough to fit over the head but not go up in size. I made the same top but out of another knit fabric that had twice the stretch of the jersey and that top is a little bit but still a nice fit. The child's head measurement is 21 1/2".

Thanking you in advance for your assistance

I hate when that happens.

What I do is to cut the neckhole larger and to make a new collar to fit (after first testing to see if it fits over the head). I Another option is to cut the turtle neck collar out of a stretchier fabric, such as ribbing.

That's how I do it too. It helps to use a 75% ratio with toddlers and kids with big heads. In other words if the neck opening measures 16" make the ribbing 12 inches, but double check before you cut, to see if it fits over the head.
To save your shirt, trim the neck off close to seam line and try it again. My oldest had a big head, and I still remember trying to wrestle a too tight neck over it. lol
When sewing with knits, using a Kwik Sew pattern will make everything so much easier.

Diane and Mikkim thanks for the suggestions.
I make these items for a friends daughter so, I don't have access to her when I am sewing. I took her head measurement hoping that would help me.

Diane, I think I am going to measure the neck opening for the next size and see how much more space I get. If I measured correctly (inside shoulder seam across to the other inside shoulder seam). I need 1" in order order for the neck opening to clear her head. This is comparing it to the mock turtle neck I made out of a different knit.

Let me know what you think.. Thanks again

The measurement is the circumference of the whole neck circle opening,it works best to use a tape measure.
