I found this while searching other info..I have often thought I wanted my own dressmaker..too much reading where the heroine is measured and a beautiful ball gown arrives the next day! Apparently fit and RTW problems have always been with us, even with dressmakers..

letter from Europe

Page 272 is where this letter starts.

Very interesting. And, yes, it IS comforting to know that there were problems then also. That was a lot of complaints, even if she were a perfectionist.

I would consider that option

There doesn't seem to be a document there that I can open, but I found the same book on OpenLibrary.org:

I found some interesting fit information starting at about the bottom of p. 274.

I don't know why it wouldn't work for you ..I just checked it again and it is still there..

Did you read the biographical note? She was quite a woman for her day..founded ophanages, a reformatory for girls, got legislation passed..an interesting resume for a time when woman still called their husband Mr. and had very little in the way of rights.

Hmm, that's odd -- I actually don't know why it does work for you, because it says it's a "no preview" Google Book. The only thing that seems to open for me is locations on a map that were apparently mentioned in the book. Weird!

I haven't read that yet, but I will. Thanks for sharing this! There were many remarkable women working behind the scenes to change things for the better -- we rarely hear of them by name, but we owe them a great debt.

Well, then it's even more interesting that it opened for me, cause when people post a link to something regarding Google books, I never am able to read anything there from a book!

I would consider that option

Many mysteries going on here with this!

Google Books has several different levels -- "full view" (not that many of these -- mostly some pretty obscure older titles), "limited preview" (you can view some pages but not all, because they want you to go buy the book), "snippet view" (just a little teaser preview), and "no preview," where they just show you the cover and give you the publication information. That particular book came up as "no preview" for me. But anything marked "limited preview" or "full preview" (also "public domain," I think) should open for you. If it doesn't, maybe you have some kind of block set up (on your Adblock settings or whatever).

That is a kick to read; thanks for the link.

It worked fine for me too - does Google Books have different permissions for previews set up in the US and Canada? That's the only thing that I could think of, Joan.

Very interesting details from the letters. Also, just to add to the internet/Google conundrum...I am able to open it but yesterday I could not do any "look inside" at Google. The message was that ny browser did not support that feature.

Go figure.

I hate this mystery of what and why some things work sometimes on computers and websites and laptops vs desktops. I have Paint Shop Pro installed on my desktop. I tried to install it on my laptop. Nope, won't work. So, I called a friend and he tried (his profession!). Nope. We called Corel...they sent us all over the cyber universe. Nope.

Corel was unaware that PSP won't work w/Vista.

sorry for the rant but that felt GOOD

It is amazing to read her letter. I recently got a nearly unintelligible voicemail from a teenager. His mother explained that he texts everyone, including her, which apparently is the reason he has forgotten how to speak. In a day and age when "R U thr" is considered a communication, this woman wrote pages about trying to find a dress that fit. And Mary - whoever she was on the other end - apparently was happy to get the letter and actually read it - and saved it.
