Date: 11/18/09 8:04 PM My dress pants rolling down at the waist band every time I sit down. I purchase a 18T dress pants, and they fit correctly, or at least I think they do....They are not tight, I actually can take the pants down without unzipping, so I think they are father on the big side How can I correct this problem? Any suggestions? Because of this problem, I am going to attempt to sew my first pair of dress pants, and I was hoping I could make an adjustment or add a stiff interfacing to fix this problem. So I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Surely, I am not the only one to have problem. |

Date: 11/19/09 3:18 PM Do you mean that you want/need to roll them down, or that they do so on their own? If it's the former, then pinch out crotch length; if it's the latter, maybe heavier interfacing or a wider waistband would help.

Date: 11/19/09 5:27 PM I guess I have a hard time relaying what I am trying to ask. First these are pants I purchased, not ones I made. I purchased a 18T. The crotch seems to hang a little, but the length is good. However, when I sit down, the top band will roll down, sometimes the band will even roll down twiced as I am sitting. I work at a desk all day, so I sit often. I am so tired of all my pants doing this. I know I have rolls around my middle, that actually pushes down the band, but there has to be a solution. I decided I want to try to sew pants. So my questions if more how do I prevent this from happening with my pants I am about to sew? Also, maybe there is an easy fix for my purchased pants, that I could alter. Any suggestions...... |

Reply to Mary Heckman Date: 11/19/09 5:44 PM It sounds like your waistband isn't firm enough to hold it's shape. If this is the problem, the fix isn't an adjustment to the pattern, but getting a firmer interfacing for the waistband.
BTW, 18T--is this a teen size pair of pants?
HTH,

You said that you can take your pants down without unzipping them, could it be that they are just too big? Do you pull your pants up above your waistline to get a better fit in the crotch? Maybe this causes the waistband to roll (kind of like water seeking its own level). I realize I'm not much help and hope someone comes along who can give you some ideas on how to fix this problem. |

I'm visualizing two things from your description: a waistband that falls down when you are seated because it is sitting below the natural waist, and the folds of flesh above the band push it down when you are seated. Or: the waistband itself folds over to a narrower strip because you don't have much waist length where the natural waist is and your body folds press it from above and below to smoosh it, such would happen with a soft belt at the waist but not with a heavier belt that would resist the folding force.
If it is a below-the-natural-waist style of the pants that is folding down because you have flesh pushing it down, maybe you would be more comfortable with a higher waisted pant style or an elastic waist that would give with your body when you move.
If it is the fold of the waistband at the waist from flesh above and below the band, a stiffer material would resist the fold but would be less comfortable to wear. ------ Fictionfan |

This is exactly what happens. My body flesh (stomach roll that is actually above my natural waist) when sits down, make the pant waist band (which is elastic with a zipper about 2" band with zipper in front) roll down over the pants and zipper. I will try to post a picture but I am not sure how. |

I have the same problem, what works for me is pants that are not so high in front and have a narrow waistband or even better no waistband at all. |
