Silk Dupioni Creases in my garage sale score | |

Date: 11/19/09 0:47 AM A few months ago I scored some striped silk dupioni, age unknown but it could easily be 20+ years old, for the magnificent sum of $2 at the neighborhood garage sale. It's enough to make a blouse out of. The stripes run across the fabric but I'm going to cut it out on the crosswise grain since I do NOT need horizontal stripes. I rinsed the fabric and machine dried it. As I was ironing it I noticed there appear to be small creases every so often running perpendicular to the stripes. They seem to go the length of the fabric. Any ideas what to do about this? Should I try actually washing the fabric and then drying it?
Thanks,

Reply to Plantwizard Date: 11/19/09 12:27 PM You might try using white vinegar on a test section. I would probably start with 25% WV, dabbing it along the crease with a dobber or rolled up cloth. Maybe go up to 50% solution but I don't know if I would try it stronger than that. Dob it on, let it dry.
Good luck! ------ Leah

Date: 11/20/09 9:10 PM I am no expert on silk - but have read that it has a tendency to rot over the years. If this silk was at a garage sale - there is probably a chance that it has not been stored properly. I would be careful cleaning or washing it.
Maybe you have a good drycleaners that you could confer with before attacking those stripes. Seems like a lot to do for a $2.00 haul - but I would do it!
Good luck - let us know how it turns out!
