I'm looking to buy a back up machine. Something that I don't mind my kids using. I'm looking at the Bernette 46. I was told it's similar to the Gem from Janome. I am not sure exactly what the similarity is.

Anybody think the Bernette 46 is good?

No comment one way or another as have no experience with it personally.. but be aware of the fact that the bernettes are or use to be made by brother I believe for bernina..

I MAY be wrong here and if so someone will come along and correct me I am sure...

Hmm...very interesting. I have to admit something. When I looked at, I wondered if it was a throw away machine. It is quite cute, however.

I haven't seen the 46--I looked on the Bernina site and couldn't find it either. But we have the 56 in the store I work at. It seems like a fairly sturdy basic machine. It sounds and runs smooth. I have heard they are manufactured to Bernina's specs somewhere like Thailand or Indonesia but not 100% sure about that. Seems like a good machine but I have not done a button hole or blind hem on it. This seems like it would be considered a "full size" machine to me. It is not a like the Janome Jem--it is bigger.

Never heard of a model 46, and I have a pile of Bernettes. I bought a basic 55 for my sister 3 years ago and she absolutely loves it. No, Brother has not historically made Bernettes; the current ones have a big 'made in China' statement on the shipping box. To me, the only thing that makes Bernette any different from the other Asian machines is Bernina-level service. Without it, nothing special.

Just found this thread on the 46 and I'm bringing this thead back up to the top.
The 46 might not be on the Bernina site as yet but was pictured recently in a flyer from my dealer. It is a pretty all black machine with a flower painted on the head. Maybe it is an anniversary model or a special edition model yet to be placed on the Bernina site.

At our local Bernina shop, the owner said that people will use it to take to classes. It's a really cute machine. I know that alone is not enough of a reason to buy one. But I am still thinking about it anyway!

I remember that around the millenium either Babylock or Brother offered a special edition new machine..maybe it was a Brother big Innovis. It was in black and I didn't like it at the time..they later offered the same machine in White. Since there have been so many white machines since then I think the black is more appealing now.
I think it was the White Co...or some other company also offered a smaller Black plastic model some years ago that Hancocks sold at the time.
This new black Bernina is more appealing to me, I guess because of the flowers on it.
I'm not in the market for a machine but I am always looking for a machine for the DGD's. Some have kids of their own to sew for now. Maybe they will sew more than my DD's have LOL..but I doubt it.

I just saw this machine at my dealer, its really cute. they are selling it for $199.00. It has 8 stitches. I'm not sure what feet come with it, does anyone know? Any one have this machine?

I looked at this one at our dealership & was thinking about it but our dealer said that it is not one for every day sewing....it is more designed that it is for occasional sewing or an occasional class. It is very very pretty however & does have a nice stitch. It seems the Gem is more of a long term sewing machine from what I have seen & read. .....I looked at the Janome My Style I thought that was decent too mechanical. ....Hope this helps.
