I was given some notions from an elderly lady that no longer sews. In the bag was 4 packages of thread I have never heard of. It isn't on a spool - it is cut in about 16" lengths and enclosed in cardboard. The cardboard says:

Rice's
pure dye
Waxed Nylon
for
Hand Sewing
Highest Quality Conveniently Cut Up

Each packet is 1 ounce. Size A. 900 yards.

From the A. H. Rice Co.
Leading makers of Sewing Threads for 85 Years
Mills: Pittsfield, Mass.

What to do with it???

Patti

It's used a lot in tailor/alteration shops. Have you ever heard of Silimide thread? I'm pretty sure it's the same thing, or close. Good for hand sewing and buttons and such. Very strong. Good find!

You can also use it for hand basting. Since it is waxed it should be strong enough to pull out without breaking.

I know I'm useless, but I can't help but compare your thread with "Simpson's Individual Stringettes!"

Monty Python's "String"

"The NOW string! Ready-cut, easy to handle, Simpson's Individual Emperor Stringettes - just the right length!"

No I hadn't heard of this - but it does sound very much like what I have - except mine is pre-cut. But it lists the size as "A" and even the same 900 yds. Interesting. It seems to be used in beading a lot too.
You all amaze me! So glad I asked.

I am going to test it for this - I do a bit of hand basting, so I am thinking it will get used.
Thanks so much for replying.

This was sooooo funny! Yes, it does fit. I just copied what was written on the packaging - but it sounded just like the Monty Python sketch, didn't it? We are MP fans here, but I had not heard this sketch. (My kids quote whole sections of sketches they do - and some of the movies - esp. the Holy Grail one - nee!)

Silimide is essentially precut too. It comes looped around a length of cardboard with a little case around all of it. You break off the bottom of the case and cut the loops and then voila! pre-cut lengths of hand sewing awesome. I've been meaning to buy some but am bitter that my only local source went out of business with no notice:mad:, so I'll have to order it online

this sort of skein is the traditional way of selling hand sewing thread. The buyer tied a string around one end, and snipped the others. You end up with a bunch of threads all the same length, and short enough to not get twisted and tangled. And it saves a huge amount of time not having to cut a thread every time you rethead a needle.

Interesting stuff - I will see if I can get a picture of it. Probably need one of my kids to do it for me.
