Date: 12/29/09 4:45 PM Trying to make decision on whether to fix MC 8000 or purchase new machine. Believe the circuit board is gone as light grew dim and is now totally black on stitch selection screen. Will only sew straight stitches now. Been a work horse for 20 yrs. Anyone else had similar issues? Fix or buy which begs question....what to buy?? |

Date: 12/29/09 7:07 PM My MC 8000 is doing the same thing. The light is going dimmer and dimmer. I never took it in, but did talk to a dealer about it. It is still running, but hard to see what stitches your are getting and it is hard to see the adjustments. My 8000 was wonderful for over 25+ years, but I believe it would be expensive to fix and parts might not be available. I never had to take it in for anything.
I bought a Juki F600. I was not all that fond of the newer Janomes, and couldn't afford a TOL. Besides I hardly ever used the embroidery part of my 8000. |

Date: 12/30/09 7:24 AM Thanks for sharing your experience. I searched the web yesterday and found instructions to reset the board. It worked! Sews every stitch beautifully again. Only thing, light is so dim I have to use a flashlight to see the panel. Site suggested to try reset option first. Then if that worked invest in a LCD backlight for the board at around $150 + labor OR if one was so inclined... DIY. I have used everything on this machine including embroidery and love the heavy metal feel. Only had this machine in the shop once in 20+ years. Just not a fan of some of the plastic bodied SMs out there. Plan to call a local dealer today for more info. |

Date: 12/30/09 8:17 AM Ginger, I see 6000, 7000 and 7500's out there and still in service. There was an 8000 on our local craig's list not long ago. If you can get your present machine back to new for a couple hundred, it sounds like you'd prefer that over a new machine. I had the 8000 years ago and you're right it just has a totally different "feel" than the newer models...more like the Elna 7300 I own now (also made by janome).. metal makes a difference. I really think most people don't sew all that much. You could conceivably get another 20 years out of a gently used one if you can find it. Or you might get another 20 out of the one you have! Post back bc i really want to hear what your dealer has to say. |

I know you have had your machine for a long time and the lighting is going but does your machine have the setting for the lighting as the newer computerized Janomes and my Kenmore has where you can adjust the brightness of the screen? |

Sewfrequent... appreciate your comments.,,, Glad someone understands my wacky comment about the metal feel of the machine.. Dealer I called today said $300 -$350 and discouraged me from repair. He tried really hard to sell me a new Janome telling me 20 years was long enough for a machine... Bah Hum Bug I say! Think I'll try another dealer/repair in the area. AND I'll keep cruising the internet.

Date: 12/31/09 9:41 AM When I talked to a dealer, he also said the repair would run around $350-$400. The Janome 8000 seems like a much sturdier machine than my new Juki. The plastic parts on the Janome are also plastic on the Juki, but the Janome's seem much sturdier i.e. spool pin, bobbin winder, presser foot lever etc. The Janome is really heavy, compared to my new machine, which I suppose means more plastic. I like the way the Juki sews though. I wish you luck in deciding what to do. Getting a new sewing machine can be fun, too. |

In my neck of the woods, the dealers tend to send all the machines to a local repair shop, although they don't all acknowledge it unless you press them. Perhaps this is the case where you live. If you could talk to the actual repair tech you may get a more thorough answer than from a dealer who would like to make a sale. |

Date: 2/22/10 3:13 PM I too have a Janome Memory Craft 8000 and love it. I haven't had it but for about 5 years, but I'd gladly let go of all my other machines to keep this one working. My machine works fine, just can't see anything either. Did anyone have an luck with getting the back light repaired? My machine has been in the shop for months, part has been ordered and back ordered and back, back ordered.........
Please let me know if anyone has had any success with this problem.
