Several years ago I used to buy sweater "yardage" and sew it together. It came with enough "fabric" for a front, back, and sleeves with the ribbing already knit on the bottom, plus you got more ribbing for the neckline.

I think the name of the company was- Thrifty "something" and might have been in PA. You called or e-mailed and they sent you little samples to choose from. I think they actually were a sweater mfr. so there was no catalog. Whatever they were making then is what your choices were. You could cut the yardage and serge it together and it was just like RTW. It was very inexpensive and I am still wearing a pullover I "made" and it still looks great.

Does anyone remember this or do you know where I could get this kind of thing?

I had a couple of these 'kits' but I'm not aware of anyplace that currently offers them.

Someone who owns a knitting machine could make this sort of yardage for you....

It was the 'Thrifty Needle' in PA. I ordered from them years ago. I was wondering if they were still around.
They used to call the yardage 'sweater bodies'

Thank you to diane s and kempcorr for the information. I didn't remember they were called sweater bodies and the address is the right one. I just called their 800 number and they answered with another company name. When I asked about it the man said they used to sell them, but he sold the company years ago because no one in the USA was making them anymore and all the sweater making has gone overseas. Plus, KMart etc. sell sweaters so cheaply they can't compete. He said he had no idea where you could get them. It was a great idea, too bad it didn't last. Thanks for information!

Anyone interested in these sweater bodies or kits anymore? I used to have a knitting factory and I still have a few machines left and I am able to knit up this fabric for you as yardage or as a sweater kit. Looking to see if there is any interest in this at all before I dive into this again.
