Subject: Great new textured pleather at Joanns Date: 1/31/10 11:06 AM

I was at my local Joann's yesterday and came across a great textured pleather in black. This fabric is supple and lightweight, backed with a tissue thin, black polyester knit, and has about 10% stretch in one direction. Because it has a nonslick texture, it's very easy to sew. I just tested a swatch on my sewing machine and it came out perfectly using my regular sewing foot.

According to Joann's website, this pleather is brand new to the store. Note that the website shows many colors and the smooth, as well as textured surface, but I can't recommend the smooth, nontextured pleather because I haven't seen it.

The 54" wide pleather is $8.99 a yard, but I used a 50% off coupon and bought it for just $4.50 a yard. I think this is an excellent value, since this particular fabric appears virtually identical to the lightweight Ultraleather in my stash which costs ten times as much.

I think this pleather would be ideal for handbags, trim and raincoats. I may even try to use it on a Wonder Wallet. So the next time you're at Joann's, be sure to check out this great new fabric.

But please watch the cashier like a hawk because the cash register programs may not give you the discount you're entitled to. Yesterday I was overcharged by $7 on a $24 transaction. But fortunately, I caught the error, and the salesclerk fixed it.

Thanks for the info Nancy. I'm thinking of ordering Christopher Nejman's new handbag book and it would be nice to be able to buy fabric locally. Let us know how the wonder wallet turns out. I have that pattern too but have never tried it out.

I love pleather. My JoAnn's had been carrying a nice selection the last few years during Halloween. I noticed this past Halloween, they kept several ones. I want to go look for a good textured pleather to make the bag in New Look 6658.

Jacqui, the fabric I found was nicer than the pleather I saw during Halloween. It should work nicely for your bag. The only thing I noticed yesterday afternoon is that the pleather gives off a strong plastic odor. I'm going to air the fabric out in the sunlight and see if that helps.

Sunlight? what is that? (here in cloudy N.E. Ohio a rare commodity this time of year...) Hope that old groundhog predicts an early spring tomorrow..

NOW, of to JoAnn's to check out that fabric and the book mentioned above.. You are all wonderful enablers.. Thanks!

I washed the vinyl surface of the pleather outside with a garden hose and let it dry in the sun. After two of these treatments, the odor is almost gone.

Nancy,

Where was the pleather located in JoAnn? I am hoping it is something they are going to feature and not just have one run and be done with it.

Gatorgirl, the pleather was on a bolt near the suit fabrics at my local Joann's. I don't know whether it's a one shot deal or something they intend to keep carrying.
